Craftsmanship and craft making have always provided a clear identity reflective of culture, materials and the creation processes. Today, the craftsman’s ability to capture tradition and character has renewed interest in 'making' methods across the world.

Advocating for a future of innovative, impactful and responsive built environments and supporting excellence in design, IFI remains concerned with the frontiers that are opened by these philosophies of making, craftsmanship and quality. As we bridge the traditions of the past with the increasing demand for a finesse reflective of today, we explore questions of expertise and longevity in modern design and production.

So often in this age of fast-paced information and soundbites, along with disposable objects, attention to detail is left by the wayside. However, the level of care and an intimate knowledge of the art of craft, sets the best designers and craftspeople apart. This results in outcomes for product, interiors and style with greater longevity.

Our Resource Council Member, Theodore Alexander, is a leading manufacturer of fine furniture, that is easily distinguished by its attention to detail. From elegant inlays and veneers, to the careful finishing of every surface—even those that usually go unnoticed—all aspects are addressed, showcasing that artistry is no accident. This beauty is reflective of the passion and effort of the skilled maker, dedicated to their trade—a quality that designers and clients value greatly.

Detail. Impact. Excellence.

B&&B BRAND POP-UPS | adidas Originals launched its Falcon W sneaker at B&&B, in a striking new '90s colorway. The deconstructed and reconstructed design was crafted by a crew of female Nike designers. Another highlight: The live performances of British poet Yrsa and German Rapper Eunique. Sweet sneakers: At the Reebok Pop-Up, guests can grab both vegan donuts and a pair of exclusive Aztreks in a hot new colorway, plus customize them to create their own perfect retro pair. House of Vans does not only offer skate workshops and a next level customization station, but also puts on fire gigs all weekend long with some of the hottest rising acts around, such as Gurr, 1000 Gram, 102 Boyz and many more. Wrangler brings all the fun with their very own retro-inspired bumper cars. Taking inspiration from their new blue and yellow 90s sports-influenced collection, the cars feature big W’s, the number 47 and the iconic Wrangler stallion.

B&&B SHOW POP-UPS | Bringing their passion for internationally sourced streetwear to B&&B, 81GB by Superconscious took over the East Side main district with three Show Pop-Ups. Each Pop-Up featured eight street style dance artists wearing their latest seasonal discoveries, especially curated for Bread&&Butter. Superconscious is the 'non-concept' streetwear store in Berlin with hard-to-find streetwear labels varying from South Korean designs to Parisian atelier craftsmanship.

B&&B TALKS | Timberland teamed up with British award-winning designer Christopher Raeburn to talk about the future of sustainable fashion, moderated by Highsnobiety’s Jan-Michael Quammie. The discussion explored how we can live with an intelligent approach to style as both creators and consumers. Especially for B&&B, State of Fashion hosted one of their meet-ups in Berlin. Each Whataboutery is based on one of the hashtags of their manifesto. In Berlin, the focus is on #FAIRNESS. During the B&&B Talk on Friday, State of Fashion’s Renee van der Hoek explored how we can create a fashion industry that speaks to all and harms few – together with fashion designer Bethany Williams.

B&&B MUSIC | The B&&B opening day saw a bunch of stellar live performances on four different stages. Berlin rapper Luciano is part of local rap crew Loco Squad Gang and made his breakthrough with the song "Jagen die Mio.". His raw lyrics have earned him respect and success both in the German charts and on B&&B’s Huawei stage.  Rising Harlem rapper Sheck Wes, who recently signed to Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music and Travis Scott's Cactus Jack Records in a joint deal, popped by at B&&B for a smashing set.

The first day of the event was brought to a high with special guest star Ms. Lauryn Hill who took over the B&&B stage for a sublime, energy-filled show. The world-famous rapper, soul singer, and former The Fugees member gave the audience goose bumps and a true 90s throwback, with songs such as “Everything is Everything“, “Ex-Factor“, “To Zion“ or “Doo-Wop (That Thing)“.

“The future is colorful“ is the title of the new Laurèl Collection for Spring/Summer 2019. We’re looking forward to everything that awaits us!

“The vision driving this collection is diversity, as a manifesto for the future. The future is colorful: a fusion of femininity, individuality and multifaceted variety, coming together to present a common passion for fashion,” says Head of Design Elisabeth Schwaiger. “Fashion is as diverse as the women that wear it. Regardless of origins, culture, age, colors, cuts, and fabrics, the task of fashion is to communicate emotions. Different looks for the widely differing stories told by life, which only become significant when personal interpretation adds the spark. Together, the items in the collection showcase an unparalleled variety, the essence of summer, a subtly exotic sensuality: glowing, vibrant, and colorful.”

These aims are embodied in floating, silky fabrics, richly glowing colors, exotic prints, delicate lace, and playful embroidery; lines are long and flowing, skimming the figure to create the light, airy feel of summer. A palette of blues teams up with clean, clear hues and tropical prints, while artful contrasts are created by combining floral embroidered skirts with casual light coats and filigree lace or sheer tulle skirts with oversized hoodies.

Long summer nights are illuminated by a dazzle of sequins teamed with shimmering brocade patterns and soft pleats in delicate shades. Given casual, sporty elegance with wide culottes, fine summer knits, and sophisticated sleeve designs, they are the perfect calling card for the collection’s unique charm and diversity.

So Seventies – this modern take, brimming with retro prints, graphic elements, and playful patterns in shades of Powder and Red, allows feelings of nostalgia and freedom to rise. Teamed with dark Navy, they create a seductive aesthetic with a dash of feminine coolness. Equally at home in rebellious outfits based on androgynous styles or in elegant, feminine lines, they’re one of the most attractive ways to stage a revolution.

Intense colors, rioting stripes, and tropical prints whisk the wearer into the heart of the (fashion) jungle, glowing with exotic appliqué elements in Yellow, Sun Orange, Framboise, and Lagoon. A midsummer night’s dream of fabrics and natural elements that is the essence of sophistication, with off-the-shoulder Carmen tops and coat dresses that capture a blend of purity and sensuousness.

Feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions or need more information. We look forward to hearing your feedback!

The winners of the Leading Culture Destinations Awards, “The Oscars for Museums,” were announced tonight at the brand new Trafalgar St. James hotel, with London’s Design Museum achieving top prize of The Leading Culture Destination 2017 overall winner.
The Leading Culture Destinations Award winners were chosen by a jury of nine established cultural gurus from around the world. The scheme, now in its fourth year, celebrates museums and cities for their dedication to cultural vitality with winners chosen based on the quality and reach of their contributions to the international cultural sphere. The awards recognise institutions, organisations, and cities that have provided exemplary contributions to local cultural life and showcase emerging destinations. Cultural destinations today are not only for art experiences and education; they have become social hubs for visitors to spend time, dine, shop, work and even sleep. LCD Awards shines light on culture as an integral part of our lifestyle.
The judges review everything from audacious programming and management structures, to cross-sector collaborations and Michelin-starred restaurants, late night openings and music performances, with an overarching focus on a visionary approach to these cultural initiatives. The winners were presented with a trophy designed by United Visual Artists.
The Awards continue to indicate a cultural growth trend towards the global periphery as traditional artistic hubs such as Paris and New York no longer have the same draw for artists, and as nations such as Mexico and Thailand seek social development to match the growth in the industry. However, the award winners for Leading Cultural Destination of the Year demonstrate that western countries have not completely lost their edge, and continue to work towards maintaining a wealth of cultural activity.
The introduction of the Climate Smart Award recognised an art institution that has significant educational contribution to the fight against climate change, highlighting how art can inform and engage, but also be a catalyst for a more sustainable future.
Another new entry to the Leading Culture Destinations Awards this year was the Sipsmith ‘Best Museum Late Night Experience’ Prize, draws attention to the transformation of museums into late night social hubs engaging the next generation of cultural nomads with innovative programming.
Founder of the Leading Culture Destinations Awards, Florian Wupperfeld, also announced the exciting news that he will be launching the Leading Cultural Destination Academy, a new knowledge sharing and networking initiative. A place where tourism and hospitality executives can meet cultural destination leaders, create new opportunities and reach the next generation of cultural travellers.
