REVEAL OF FULL EXHIBITION SCHEDULE AND ARTISTS PROGRAM FOR 2020

On November 9th, 2019 MCM and KÖNIG GALERIE celebrated the grand opening of the exhibition space KÖNIG TOKIO at the MCM Ginza Haus I in Tokyo. In the presence of photographer Juergen Teller, over 200 guests from the worlds of art, fashion and culture gathered for the inaugural exhibition. Hosted by MCM’s Global Creative Officer Dirk Schoenberger and gallerists Johann and Lena König notable guests included the German ambassador to Japan Ina Lepel, Shota Matsuda, Rila Fukushima, Mariya Nishiuchi among others.
The solo exhibition Heimweh centers on the concept of homesickness, a re-evaluation of Teller’s German identity and his position as a European immigrant to the UK in the midst of the ongoing Brexit uncertainty. Set up as an interplay between large-scale formats and smaller pictures, the exhibition will run from November 9th, 2019 to January 11th, 2020. Many of the works are shown in public for the first time.
Global luxury brand MCM and Berlin-based gallery KÖNIG GALERIE joined forces to establish a 3000 sqft. exhibition space for contemporary art at the MCM GINZA HAUS I, the brand’s Japanese flagship concept store. With a focus on showcasing a roster of key influential German, Austrian and Swiss artists in Japan, the temporary gallery KÖNIG TOKIO will run multiple exhibitions starting from November 2019 through to December 2020 – among them internationally renowned artists such as Katharina Grosse, Alicja Kwade, Erwin Wurm and more.
The MCM Ginza HAUS I is MCM’s concept space celebrating the brand’s heritage of culture, craft and creativity. As an architectural landmark where art, fashion, culture converge and the experiential meet, it is the ideal venue for KÖNIG TOKIO.

Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and co-organised by the Tourism Commission, the “International Light Art Display” will bring a new batch of light art installations to town. The new creations all share the theme of Love and Romance and will be displayed together with some of the existing popular light art installations starting from tomorrow, 18 January, until 24 February. The light art installations along with the beautiful setting of the Victoria Harbour will surely turn the Central harbourfront into the most romantic photo background for couples and will definitely become a popular social media “check-in” hotspot during Valentine’s Day and Spring Lantern Festival.
There will be 15 light art installations created by local and overseas artists at the “International Light Art Display”, among which seven art installations are new pieces created with the theme of Love and Romance. In addition, some of the installations are interactive. Among the new light art installations, three were created by overseas artists, including a piece titled “Bunch of Tulips” from Hungary, that greets visitors with a colourful bunch of giant LED flowers, and the interactive “Birds Fly Around With You” from Japan, that illuminates more bird sculptures when more people step into the magical circle. In addition, there are four local installations, including “Geometry of Love”, which inspires from colourful stained glass church windows to reflect geometric heart-shaped patterns on the ground, and “Hello, Stranger”, where the gaze of two activates 60 seconds of interactive LED lighting and music.
The Light Tunnel at the Tamar Park in Admiralty will be dressed in pink to echo the theme of Love and Romance. The 50-metre tunnel will display multiple heart shapes to grab the attention of lovers.
On top of the new installations, eight popular existing installations, which have been on display from the very beginning of the Festival in November 2018, including “Angels of Freedom”, “Talking Heads” and “Tapping”, will still be there. The “International Light Art Display” is a major component of the “Hong Kong Pulse Light Festival”, which is a brand new mega-event launched in November 2018. This exhibition will still be displayed at the Central and Western District Promenade (Central Section) and lighting time will be maintained at 5pm to 11pm daily.

Janssen Vaccines & Prevention B.V., una de las Compañías Farmacéuticas Janssen de Johnson & John son, anunció los resultados de un nuevo estudio publicado en la revista Nature que sugieren que la combinación de la vacunación terapéutica con estimulación inmunológica, podría ser una manera de lograr una cura funcional para la infección por VIH-1, a largo plazo sin necesidad de terapia antirretroviral (ART) de por vida.
El estudio fue conducido por científicos del Centro Médico Beth Israel Deaconess (BIDMC), el Programa de Investigación Sobre VIH del Ejército de los Estados Unidos (MHRP) del Instituto de Investigación del Ejército Walter Reed (WRAIR) y colaboradores de la industria incluyendo a Janssen y a Gilead Sciences, Inc.
El VIH/Sida se caracteriza por infectar las células del sistema inmune y obstruir su función, lo que progresivamente debilita la capacidad del organismo para defenderse de las infecciones y otras enfermedades. A nivel mundial, de acuerdo con el Programa Conjunto de las Naciones Unidas sobre el VIH/Sida (ONUSIDA), 36.7 millones de personas vivían con este padecimiento a finales de 2015, de las cuales 1.8 millones tuvieron acceso a la terapia antirretroviral y 1.1 millones fallecieron a causa de enfermedades relacionadas con el SIDA]. En México, de acuerdo con el Centro Nacional para la Prevención y el Control del VIH y el Sida (CENSIDA), durante el año pasado y lo que va del 2016, se han reportado 19,880 nuevos casos con este diagnóstico, lo que suma un total de 134,070 de personas con VIH/SIDA en el país.
“Si bien hemos logrado grandes avances en el desarrollo de tratamientos que permitan a las personas con VIH tener vidas de duración casi normal, actualmente los pacientes necesitan tomar píldoras todos los días durante el resto de sus vidas”, señala el Dr. Paul Stoffels, M.D., Director Científico de Johnson & Johnson. “Nuestro objetivo es trabajar en el espectro completo para tener una cura funcional que mantenga bajo control al virus sin la carga de estar bajo tratamientos de por vida y, en un futuro, contar con una vacuna preventiva que detenga al VIH desde un principio”.
Típicamente las vacunas “enseñan” al cuerpo a deshacerse de los virus invasores provocando una respuesta inmunológica. Sin embargo, el VIH ataca y mata a la mayoría de las células del sistema inmunológico que son infectadas pero se mantiene latente en otras. Estos reservorios de células infectadas por el virus latente (donde los investigadores piensan que permanece oculto el VIH durante la ART) es la principal razón por la que actualmente no es posible curar la infección por el VIH.
En este nuevo estudio conducido en primates no humanos (NHPs) infectados con el virus de la inmunodeficiencia de los simios (SIV), un virus similar al VIH, la estrategia consistió en hacer que el virus saliera de su escondite con el objetivo de eliminarlo del cuerpo. Los investigadores combinaron dos vacunas terapéuticas experimentales (una vacuna con vector de adenovirus de serotipo 26 [Ad26] y una vacuna con vector de MVA [MVA]) con un agonista de TLR7 (un fármaco experimental que actúa sobre una proteína del sistema inmunológico) en un régimen de tratamiento para su administración junto con ART. Cuando el régimen de tratamiento fue administrado a los primates, éstos mostraron una disminución de los niveles de DNA viral en la sangre periférica y en los ganglios linfáticos en adición a una mejora de la supresión viral y una demora del rebote viral al detenerse la ART.
“Si bien salvan la vida de las personas, los fármacos antirretrovirales actuales no curan la infección por el VIH; sólo lo mantienen bajo control. Estamos tratando de desarrollar estrategias para lograr una supresión viral a largo plazo sin necesidad de ART”, declaró el autor principal, Dan Barouch, M.D., Ph.D., Director del Centro para la Investigación de Virología y Vacunas del BIDMC y Profesor de Medicina en la Facultad de Medicina de Harvard.
Las vacunas experimentales Ad26/MVA indujeron en el estudio preclínico una respuesta inmunológica robusta. La amplitud de la respuesta inmunológica celular mostró una correlación inversa con las cargas virales y una correlación directa con el tiempo del rebote viral. Esto brinda una correlación inmunológica que posiblemente podría utilizarse para predecir las respuestas en seres humanos, aunque esto necesita ser confirmado en estudios clínicos.
Janssen inició recientemente en colaboración con el MHRP estudios en seres humanos para evaluar el potencial de la vacunación terapéutica para el VIH en pacientes infectados que iniciaron ART durante la infección aguda. El estudio de Fase I/IIa está evaluando la seguridad y la inmunogenicidad del régimen de vacunación con Ad26/MVA. Dicho estudio también explorará el efecto sobre el control de la viremia después de la interrupción del tratamiento antirretroviral en forma posterior a la vacunación. El estudio enrolará a pacientes que hayan iniciado ART durante la infección aguda por VIH y que actualmente estén bajo ART estable.

La Cineteca Nacional y MICGénero, desde la plataforma de formación FOCUS CAMP, Foro de Distribución Audiovisual, anuncian que el documental The Occupation of the American Mind: Israel's Public Relations War in the United States de Loretta Alper y Jeremy Earp,agotó el número de boletos puestos a la venta para su proyección el día 30 de septiembre, a las 20:00 en la sala 2, Salvador Toscano.
La proyección contará con una breve presentación del productor ejecutivo Sut Jhally y del músico y compositor británico Roger Waters, quien participó como narrador en este filme. Para quienes no pudieron hacerse de una entrada para este evento, se informa que la presentación previa a la exhibición de la película se podrá apreciar vía streaming a través de las plataformas digitales de la Cineteca y de MIC Género el día de la función.

Sagan ber nafnið, Við þurfum breytingu - Íslenski draumurinn, en hún kom út á Spáni í október. Jordi segir að samkeppnin á rithöfundamarkaðnum á Spáni sé mjög hörð og það hafi verið mjög erfitt fyrir hann að fá bókina út gefna en það hafi tekist og hann sé býsna glaður með það.
„Bókin var kynnt í hinni virtu bókaverslun La Casa del Libro í Barselóna þann 24. október og mættu 150 manns í teitið,“ segir Jordi.
Eins og fyrr segir flutti Jordi til Íslands ásamt eiginkonu sinni, Guðnýju Hilmarsdóttur, og börnum þeirra tveimur. Þau seldu allt sitt hafurtask og keyrðu til Íslands í gegnum Evrópu og sigldu svo með Norrænu til Íslands.
„Ísland hefur lengi verið fyrirmynd fyrir mér aðallega vegna viðbragða íslensku þjóðarinnar við hruninu og kreppunni sem því fylgdi. Á Spáni var lítið gert,“ segir hann. Hann segirst heillast af sjálfstæði Íslands frá Evrópusambandinu og líka vegna orkusjálfbærni landsins.“
Hann er alveg heillaður af Íslandi og segir að það hafi ekki verið annað hægt en að flétta Ísland inn í bókina.
„Það eru endalausar tilvitnanir og í þeim köflum sem gerast hérlendis má lesa um ýmsar venjur Íslendinga,“ segir hann. Bókin er nútíma skáldsaga.
Hann segir að ekki sé um spennusögu að ræða heldur fjalli sagan um tónlistarmann sem er þreyttur á að 1% þjóðarinnar njóti þjóðarauðsins. „Hann ákveður að stofna stjórnmálaflokkinn, Við þurfum tilbreytingu, og stefnir þannig á að geta stjórnað á Spáni. Gagnrýnendur segja að hann ekki eiga séns í stóru flokkana, en hann hlustar á innri rödd sína með orð Gandhi bak við eyrað: „Til að hlutirnir breytist þarftu að byrja á sjálfum þér: Be the change“. Aðalsögupersónan stendur í þeirri meiningu að orkan sem nýtt er í grunnþarfir gæti verið ókeypis og græn. Einnig hvetur hann fólk til að stíga út fyrir þægindarammann til að láta drauma sína rætast,“ segir hann.
Jordi skráði sig í íslensku við Háskóla Íslands þegar hann flutti til landsins, en hvað ætlar hann að gera við tungumál sem aðeins 350.000 manns tala?
„Ég var alltaf með það á hreinu. Ég er Katalónskur og í Katalóníu stöndum við í því sama, með að halda katalónskunni á lofti gagnvart spænskunni, eins og Íslendingarnir íslenskunni gagnvart enskunni. Ég kom hingað til að aðlagast samfélaginu.“
Jordi varð hissa á ótrúlegustu hlutum þegar hann flutti til Íslands. Það sem hann hjó sérstaklega eftir var að fólk lækkaði ekki í ofnunum hjá sér.
„Það að opna gluggann í staðinn fyrir að lækka í kyndingunni, ef það er of heitt inni; sjá fólk fara úr skóm á tannlæknastofunni; borga fyrir smá upphæðir með kreditkorti, skilyrðislaus stuðningur þjóðarinnar við landsliðin. Þetta þekkist ekki á Spáni - þar vantar alla samheldni,“ segir hann.
Aðspurður hvað honum finnist best við Ísland nefnir hann víðáttuna.
„Einnig finnst mér fyndið þegar ég heyri fólk kvarta undan umferðaöngþveiti í Reykjavík, sem er ekkert miðað við Barselóna eða Madríd. Í Reykjavík finnst mér frábært að búa og þurfa ekki að fara út fyrir hana til að komast í snertingu við náttúruna. Frelsið sem börnin búa við er ómetanlegt. Á Spáni njóta börn ekki þessa sjálfstæðis að geta farið ein út að leika. Mér finnst gott að hafa kvöldmatartíman svona snemma og geta melt matinn almennilega áður en kemur að háttatíma.“
Bókin hans Jordi verður fáanleg á Borgarbókasafni Reykjavíkur fljótlega og er hann að vinna í því að þýða hana yfir á íslensku.

what the crow in the crown
of the cherry tree
is plotting?
Black feathers in pink snow!
I remember the hours
of love's holding,
sleeping and waking—the same.
I remember the fog and the pain
of love's fumbling,
sleeping and waking—the same.
I let go, abandon dreams
of being abandoned
the way, now, the egret
sweeps white wings
across the clearing sky.
At the river's rim, a goose
tucks the black snake
of its neck
along its soft spine.
Like an eye
awake in its sleeping—
the white cheek-patch.
Like time stalling—the river
in its fullness, still.
Still in their clothes,
layered like the homeless
in everything they own,
a man and a woman
hiding inside their history.
There is no memory that can undo me!
Weightless without wanting,
a man undressing
before a woman,
a woman undressing
in the presence of a man.
There is no nakedness that can kill me!
There is only this:
the moving in and moving out
of water, of light;
the beating and the resting,
black wings, white wings—the same;
the wind breathing
into the day and the day's
receiving mouth.
