UAE team come in 4th place to qualify for Barcelona final

This was the first time that the Kiwi showjumpers have had the call-up to the event and they proved they are worthy competitors. Victory went to New Zealand and they were victorious in the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup ™ of UAE at the state of the art Al Forsan International Sports Resort.

After 2 rounds of intense competition it was New Zealand and Ireland that were left tied at the top of the table with 12 points each, forcing a jump off over 13 fences. Samantha McIntosh was the first rider from New Zealand and once again completed a clear round in 40.16 putting the pressure on Irish rider Shane Breen. Breen and his horse Laith could not match the round of McIntosh and Check In and therefore New Zealand were crowned the winners.

A huge achievement for the team from New Zealand made up of Daniel Meech on Fine, Richard Gardener on Calisto, Bruce Goodin on Backatorps Danny V, Samantha McIntosh on Check In and Chef d’Equipe Ulrika Goodin. In addition to winning the prize of €64,000, the win also secures them a place in the final in Barcelona later this year.

Speaking at the press conference Samantha McIntosh commented: “I’m not sure where it came from today, I think we are all in shock. It’s been a long journey for us to get here and we all supported each other as a team. In terms of the jump off, I didn’t really have time to be nervous, I just thought ‘Lets do it’! My horse has also been on great form which probably helped.”

Finishing the two rounds on 20 points, Italy were close but didn’t quite make it to the jump off. Team UAE finished tied 4th alongside Saudi Arabia who will both automatically qualify for the Barcelona final.

The winners of the Leading Culture Destinations Awards, “The Oscars for Museums,” were announced tonight at the brand new Trafalgar St. James hotel, with London’s Design Museum achieving top prize of The Leading Culture Destination 2017 overall winner.
The Leading Culture Destinations Award winners were chosen by a jury of nine established cultural gurus from around the world. The scheme, now in its fourth year, celebrates museums and cities for their dedication to cultural vitality with winners chosen based on the quality and reach of their contributions to the international cultural sphere. The awards recognise institutions, organisations, and cities that have provided exemplary contributions to local cultural life and showcase emerging destinations. Cultural destinations today are not only for art experiences and education; they have become social hubs for visitors to spend time, dine, shop, work and even sleep. LCD Awards shines light on culture as an integral part of our lifestyle.
The judges review everything from audacious programming and management structures, to cross-sector collaborations and Michelin-starred restaurants, late night openings and music performances, with an overarching focus on a visionary approach to these cultural initiatives. The winners were presented with a trophy designed by United Visual Artists.
The Awards continue to indicate a cultural growth trend towards the global periphery as traditional artistic hubs such as Paris and New York no longer have the same draw for artists, and as nations such as Mexico and Thailand seek social development to match the growth in the industry. However, the award winners for Leading Cultural Destination of the Year demonstrate that western countries have not completely lost their edge, and continue to work towards maintaining a wealth of cultural activity.
The introduction of the Climate Smart Award recognised an art institution that has significant educational contribution to the fight against climate change, highlighting how art can inform and engage, but also be a catalyst for a more sustainable future.
Another new entry to the Leading Culture Destinations Awards this year was the Sipsmith ‘Best Museum Late Night Experience’ Prize, draws attention to the transformation of museums into late night social hubs engaging the next generation of cultural nomads with innovative programming.
Founder of the Leading Culture Destinations Awards, Florian Wupperfeld, also announced the exciting news that he will be launching the Leading Cultural Destination Academy, a new knowledge sharing and networking initiative. A place where tourism and hospitality executives can meet cultural destination leaders, create new opportunities and reach the next generation of cultural travellers.

When you make a list of the most successful NASCAR drivers in the last three decades, it doesn’t take long for Mark Martin’s name to rise to the top.

The Batesville, Arkansas-native won 40 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races, finished second in the championship standings five times and notched five titles in the IROC Series during the course of his 31-year career. The 2017 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee was also incredibly proficient in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, winning 49 races and 30 poles.

Clint Bowyer and his No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team will tap into that proficiency in the Sept. 3 Southern 500 NASCAR Cup Series event at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway when they honor Martin with a throwback paint scheme from when he drove a Carolina Ford Dealers Ford Thunderbird for Bill Davis Racing in 43 XFINITY Series races between 1988 and 1991.

Martin earned three XFINITY Series victories and scored 11 top-five finishes in the predominantly blue, white and red Carolina Ford Dealers Thunderbird. His best Darlington result in this car was second in the 1989 Country Squire 200 where he finished .37 of a second behind race-winner Geoff Bodine. But that runner-up effort was a prelude of what was to come, as Martin eventually earned eight XFINITY Series wins at Darlington to augment his two Southern 500 victories in 1993 and 2009.

“If you want to associate yourself with a winner and all that’s good about our sport and its history, then you aren’t going to do any better than Mark Martin,” said Bowyer, who raced as a teammate with Martin in 2012 and 2013 while at Michael Waltrip Racing.

“I’m proud to say I got to race with and against Mark in my career, and it’s an honor to have him join us at Darlington in September,” Bowyer said. “When the folks at SHR and Carolina Ford Dealers came up with this idea, I was pretty pumped up for it. Then I saw the paint scheme and I knew it was going to be one of the best in Darlington.”

Martin, whose 49 XFINITY Series victories ranks second all time, drove a Carolina Ford Dealers paint scheme to victory at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway on March 5, 1988; Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway on Aug. 25, 1989 and Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Speedway on June 30, 1990.

“Carolina Ford Dealers won in the state of South Carolina almost 30 years ago, so I think they’re probably due for another win in South Carolina this September with Clint,” laughed the 58-year-old Martin, whose last Cup race came at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 17, 2013 in SHR’s No. 14 as he subbed for an injured Tony Stewart. “Seriously, this is a really cool deal and brings back a lot of memories. This was a good time and I hope the race fans enjoy it as much as I will seeing it out on the track. Darlington is one of my favorite places on earth and I’m not going to miss this one.”

The 1.366-mile Darlington track and its Labor Day race weekend host “The Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR” when the industry honors the sport’s history. Last year, 36 Cup Series teams competed with throwback paint schemes in the Southern 500, the most in any single NASCAR event in the sport’s history.
