Fernando Alonso celebrated a winning start to his FIA World Endurance Championship career as he and teammates Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima took a conclusive victory in today’s eventful TOTAL 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. 63,000 fans enjoyed superb weather, fun and entertainment on and off track over the three days that the WEC was in Belgium.
In the first race of the 2018-19 WEC Super Season the No.8 Toyota Gazoo Racing car led the vast majority of the race to head home the sister Toyota TS050 HYBRID of Mike Conway, José María López and Kamui Kobayashi.
Alonso crossed the finish line 1.444s ahead of Mike Conway in a formation finish which was made all the more remarkable by the No.7 Toyota TS050 HYBRID starting from the pit lane, a lap behind the entire field, after a post-qualifying technical infringement.
For Alonso it was his first victory at Spa for almost 18 years and he became the first Spaniard to win a WEC race since Marc Gené triumphed for Audi, also at Spa, in 2012.
Rounding out the podium was the No.1 Rebellion Racing crew of André Lotterer, Neel Jani and Bruno Senna in their first race with the new non-hybrid Rebellion R13-Gibson.
The sister Rebellion Racing entry of Thomas Laurent, Gustavo Menezes and Mathias Beche took fourth, while the ByKolles ENSO CLM P1/01-Nismo took a best ever fifth position.

Ferrari proved once again to be the team to beat in 2017. The Prancing Horse has this year in the FIA World Endurance Championship taken a fifth FIA GT Manufacturers title in six years, a first FIA GT Drivers title (the first to be awarded as a world championship title), a fifth victory of the season in today’s 6 Hours of Bahrain, and for AF Corse, a fourth GTE Pro Teams Trophy since 2012.

The No.71 Ferrari 488 GTE of Sam Bird and Davide Rigon was presented with the win in the LMGTE Pro class by their team mates James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi in the No.51 who clinched the GT FIA World Endurance Championship title. The Champions established a strong lead through the race which, although pushed hard by the No.67 Ford GT and their team mates, was never bettered. The pass by the No.71 for the lead was in the dying moments of the race.
The No.67 Ford GT of Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell, which had been in championship contention going into the final round of the season, finished third after being delayed by a slow pit stop but never really having the pace of the Italian cars. The No.91 Porsche 911 RSR of Frederic Makowiecki and Richard Lietz had been in contention earlier in the race, but dropped back in the final third and eventually finished fourth in class.

Aston Martin claim top honours in LMGTE Am as Vantage bows out

The two LMGTE Pro Aston Martin entries may not have been able to challenge for a win today, but in GTE Am, Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda gave the venerable Aston Martin Vantage the best possible send off by winning and securing the FIA World Endurance Trophies for GTE Am Teams and Drivers.
It was the trio’s fourth victory of the season, but their consistency and seven pole positions also added to their points’ tally. Farewell then to the Vantage, and welcome to its 2018 replacement which will be revealed by Aston Martin next week in London.
Second in Am was the No.61 Clearwater Racing entry of Matt Griffin, Keita Sawa and Weng Sun Mok who led home the Ferrari 488 GTE of Spirit of Race for the final podium position.

Rookie Test entry list revealed

A provisional entry list (below) for the official WEC Rookie Test in Bahrain has been released, revealing that 12 cars will be taking part in the five available hours of track time at Bahrain International Circuit on Sunday 19 November
It is worth noting that whichever team wins the LMGTE Pro championship (whether that is AF Corse, Porsche GT Team or Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team UK) must provide a car in which the 3rd placed driver from the World Series Formula V8 3.5 will test. Equally, whichever team wins the LMP2 championship (Vaillante Rebellion, Jackie Chan DC Racing or Signatech Alpine Matmut) will test the 2nd placed driver from the single seater series.
As already announced (see original article HERE), Jackie Chan DC Racing’s Thomas Laurent will complete a minimum of 30 laps in the No.7 Toyota TS050 HYBRID, and Mike Conway from Toyota Gazoo Racing will be on hand to set a benchmark and guide the young Frenchman through his step up to LMP1. The winner of the 2017 World Series FV8 won’t be known until the morning before the test in Bahrain, and the lucky driver will be testing the No.1 Porsche 919 Hybrid.
As well as some more well-known WEC names, Mahaveer Raghunathan from India will test with G-Drive Racing, Konstantin Tereshchenko from Russia will drive TDS Racing’s ORECA 07, and Frenchman Gabriel Aubry will complete laps in the Signatech Alpine A470. In LMGTE, AF Corse will welcome Ishikawa Motoaki from Japan to the Ferrari 488 GTE.
More drivers will be announced closer to the date of the test.
