Ferrari proved once again to be the team to beat in 2017. The Prancing Horse has this year in the FIA World Endurance Championship taken a fifth FIA GT Manufacturers title in six years, a first FIA GT Drivers title (the first to be awarded as a world championship title), a fifth victory of the season in today’s 6 Hours of Bahrain, and for AF Corse, a fourth GTE Pro Teams Trophy since 2012.

The No.71 Ferrari 488 GTE of Sam Bird and Davide Rigon was presented with the win in the LMGTE Pro class by their team mates James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi in the No.51 who clinched the GT FIA World Endurance Championship title. The Champions established a strong lead through the race which, although pushed hard by the No.67 Ford GT and their team mates, was never bettered. The pass by the No.71 for the lead was in the dying moments of the race.
The No.67 Ford GT of Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell, which had been in championship contention going into the final round of the season, finished third after being delayed by a slow pit stop but never really having the pace of the Italian cars. The No.91 Porsche 911 RSR of Frederic Makowiecki and Richard Lietz had been in contention earlier in the race, but dropped back in the final third and eventually finished fourth in class.

Aston Martin claim top honours in LMGTE Am as Vantage bows out

The two LMGTE Pro Aston Martin entries may not have been able to challenge for a win today, but in GTE Am, Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda gave the venerable Aston Martin Vantage the best possible send off by winning and securing the FIA World Endurance Trophies for GTE Am Teams and Drivers.
It was the trio’s fourth victory of the season, but their consistency and seven pole positions also added to their points’ tally. Farewell then to the Vantage, and welcome to its 2018 replacement which will be revealed by Aston Martin next week in London.
Second in Am was the No.61 Clearwater Racing entry of Matt Griffin, Keita Sawa and Weng Sun Mok who led home the Ferrari 488 GTE of Spirit of Race for the final podium position.

Signatech Alpine snatches crucial pole point in LMP2

The LMP2 category saw a fascinating grid order unfold as the Signatech Alpine duo of André Negrão and Gustavo Menezes combined to seal a third pole of the 2017 season for Les Bleues.
It was a fine performance form the Brazilian/US alliance as they swept to a 1m47.227s average to claim the pole by 0.3s. Menezes has an outside chance of taking back-to-back titles but with a 22-point deficit looks likely to have to reply on good fortune.
Lining up second and third in class will be the title protagonists, the No.31 Vaillante Rebellion and No.38 Jackie Chan DC Racing entries. Bruno Senna and Julien Canal have a four point advantage heading in to the race tomorrow over Oliver Jarvis, Thomas Laurent and Ho-Pin Tung.
• LMP2 pole goes to Signatech Alpine as Andre Negrão and Gustavo Menezes combine to take third pole position of season with an average of 1m47.227
• No.38 Jackie Chan DC Racing title chasers start second
• Title leaders Bruno Senna and Julien Canal in No.31 Vaillante Rebellion entry start right behind rivals in third as they have four point advantage

Ferrari claim critical GTE pole

Ferrari came out on top after another closely fought LMGTE Pro qualifying session at the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain this evening. Davide Rigon and Sam Bird took their fourth pole position of the 2017 FIA WEC campaign to ensure that Rigon’s slight title chances remained.
The No.71 AF Corse Ferrari took the pole with an average of 1m56.033s. Rigon set a sensational best outright lap of 1m47.058 to set a new qualifying record in class with the Ferrari 488GTE.
Lining up alongside the Ferrari will be the No.97 Aston Martin Vantage V8 GTE as it bows out this weekend after a glorious WEC career.
Darren Turner and Jonny Adam set an average of 1m56.372s, while No.67 Ford GT duo of Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell placed third, as the British pair set about hunting down title rivals - James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi - who start just one place behind in their No.51 AF Corse Ferrari.
Porsche duo Frederic Makowiecki and Richard Lietz finish sixth as they look to reduce the two point deficit to Calado and Pier Guidi in points table.

Lamy and Dalla Lana take 7th pole of the year!

Pedro Lamy and Paul Dalla Lana take seventh pole position from nine races and extend lead in title stakes to 11 points. Lamy and Dalla Lana set average lap time of 2m00.111s, with Lamy peaking on category best of 1m59.328s.

Porsche take third straight 1-2 in COTA

Porsche LMP Team continued its winning momentum at the 6 Hours of COTA with a third consecutive 1-2 on Saturday at the sixth round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship.
Earl Bamber, in the No.2 Porsche 919 Hybrid, crossed the finish line just 0.276s ahead of stablemate Nick Tandy in the No.1 car to claim a fourth consecutive victory for he and teammates Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley.
The trio extend their title advantage and helped Porsche to pull away further from Toyota in the Manufacturers' standings.
Held in challenging hot and humid conditions, the race was an epic strategic contest which saw the rhythm of the race swing from Porsche to Porsche. The 2017 rule change, which brought down the allocation of six sets of tyres to four for qualifying and the race, saw the teams challenged with choosing when to double-stint their Michelin tyres in the hot temperatures.

Ferrari fight hard through to GTE victory

Ferrari No.51 488 GTE won today’s 6 Hours of COTA in +33oC Texan temperatures, but it was no easy run for Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado on the way to their second victory of the season.
The duo had a race-long fight with the No.95 Aston Martin Vantage, the No.92 Porsche 911 RSR and the sister No.71 Ferrari 488 GTE, with the lead changing between them due to tyre strategies.
The No.51 survived a scare with 11 minutes to go when Pier Guidi was forced to take the risk of returning at high speed to the pits due to a puncture. The risk paid off and quick pit work by AF Corse saw the Ferrari driver come out just ahead of Michael Christensen’s Porsche which eventually finished 5.6s behind in second place – the No.92’s best result of the season so far.

Signatech Alpine Matmut wins LMP2 despite late scare

Reigning LMP2 champions, Signatech Alpine Matmut, took a North American double as the French team followed up their Mexico City podium with victory at COTA. For Lapierre and Menezes it was also a second victory in Texas in as many years.
Menezes, the sole American driver in the field this year, was especially delighted to claim another maximum score on home ground.
There was a late scare for Les Bleues though as they were forced to change the rear bodywork section with just 12-minutes of the race remaining. Gustavo Menezes though had enough in hand and was able to take the chequered flag with a comfortable margin ahead of the Vaillante Rebellion pair of ORECA-Gibson entries.
The title leading No.38 Jackie Chan DC Racing of Oliver Jarvis, Thomas Laurent and Ho-Pin Tung took fourth position.

Aston Martin claim LMGTE Am victory

In LMGTE Am, Aston Martin Racing’s No.98 Vantage of Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda won for the second time this season, 50s ahead of nearest rival, the No.61 Clearwater Racing Ferrari.
After a dramatic first few hours to the race, the trio came through to a solid finish to keep the lead of the LMGTE Am Drivers’ championship battle, four points ahead of the No.77 Dempsey Proton Racing crew who had a difficult American race.
Clearwater Racing maintained its consistently strong form to take more valuable points, while Spirit of Race’s No. 54 Ferrari 488 GTE came home in third place in class. For Francesco Castellacci, Thomas Flohr and Miguel Molina, it was their best result of the season and their first WEC podium.
The next round will be the 6 Hours of Fuji on the 15th October. CLICK HERE for provisional results, HERE for championship classifications and HERE for race facts.

For many decades, the inclusion of Grand Touring sportscars has been an integral part of major endurance racing events across the globe, most notably the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Competitors and fans have benefited from the high performing, evocative sights and sounds of marques such as Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford and Porsche.
These GTE cars are based on production models, and are fundamentally different from each other. To create a more level playing field for competition, regulators have the ability to apply fine adjustments in the performance of individual cars to allow each model to be competitive.
The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) and the GTE Manufacturers entered in the FIA World Endurance Championship have now agreed upon a plan for the governance of Balance of Performance (BOP). An innovative and ground-breaking automatic system will be introduced from the opening round of the 2017 season, the 6 Hours of Silverstone.
Adjustments to the balance of performance for cars entered in the LMGTE Pro category during the season will now be made automatically after certain rounds, according to evaluation criteria defined and agreed by all parties before the start of the season.
A calculation tool has been created which will allow the targets for balancing the different car models to be met, without human interpretation or decision-making, and using mathematical formulas based on the quantified, public, specific, measured data obtained during each race. More specific details can be found in the attached document which was jointly prepared by the FIA and ACO.
This new system will be applicable for all rounds of the 2017 WEC except for the 24 Hours of Le Mans which will be treated separately. It will only be used for the manufacturers in the LMGTE Pro class, and the same system used up until 2016 will be applied to the LMGTE Am competitors.
The manufacturers and regulators have decided not to make the first adjustments until after the first two races so as not to over-react. It has therefore been agreed that the first adjustments will be calculated after Spa, applicable for Round 4, the 6 Hours of Nürburgring.

Monza to host official pre-season test

The 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship calendar, presented today to the FIA Endurance Commission, presided over by Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, and which will be submitted to the FIA World Motor Sport Council for validation in the coming days, once again offers the WEC’s manufacturers, teams and partners the stability, visibility and geographic spread of prestigious worldwide venues that have been a mark of the championship to date.
While the nine rounds closely echo the 2016 calendar in terms of venues and dates, a significant addition to the calendar is the debut of the WEC at the temple of Italian motorsport, Monza, for the official pre-season test – The Prologue. The addition of the high-speed circuit to the calendar will be a welcome addition for teams as part of their preparations for the cornerstone event of the world championship, the Le Mans 24 Hours.
All events will be of a duration of six hours, other than Le Mans. The season starts, as is now tradition, with European rounds at Silverstone, Spa, Le Mans and Nürburgring, before the trans-continental journey begins to Mexico, USA, Japan, China and Bahrain.
“We are very pleased to have maintained this level of stability in the five years of the WEC to date, and our 2017 calendar allows us to continue to build on the tradition of endurance racing around the world,” said Pierre Fillon, President of the ACO. “Our increasing number of fans year on year is proof that returning to a venue at a similar time of year encourages people to make their plans to attend well in advance…and to bring friends with them to enjoy all the entertainment and access that the WEC offers. The Le Mans 24 Hours needs no introduction, but we know that audiences in countries such as Mexico can only increase as their knowledge and interest in the WEC grows. We look forward to an exciting 2017 starting with our first visit to Italy.”
“The opportunity to start our season at Monza is one we are sure will please competitors, fans and media alike,” said Gérard Neveu, CEO of the WEC. “We hope that our calendar not only meets the expectations and requirements of all our partners and competitors, and makes economic and logistical sense, but also that it fits in with the increasing number of events that each venue hosts. The WEC continues to offer fans access to the most technologically relevant, competitive, and open championship possible, as well as offering our manufacturers Aston Martin, Audi, Ferrari, Ford, Porsche and Toyota the perfect showcase for their products on and off track.”
