MAHINDRA RACING FIRST FORMULA E TEAM AND FIA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRANT TO BE CERTIFIED NET ZERO CARBON FOOTPRINT SINCE INCEPTION

/ The most sustainable team on the grid becomes the first Formula E outfit and first FIA World Championship entrant to be certified Net Zero Carbon footprint
/ Pledges to the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework

As it continues its vital sustainability work at pace, Mahindra Racing is pleased to announce that it is the first Formula E team, and first FIA World Championship entrant, to be certified Net Zero Carbon footprint since inception. The certification has been approved by the ALLCOT Group for carbon emission offsetting for the entirety of the team’s existence.

The emission allowances have been marked for permanent removal from the pool of offsetting credits at the Environmental Registry on behalf of the team’s chosen REDD+ Project.

Established in 2009, ALLCOT is a leader in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions management tools and strategies for businesses of all sizes. By neutralizing GHG emissions, Mahindra Racing is not only able to protect the environment, but also provide community benefits that enhance profitability and brand value, increase employee satisfaction, to combat the climate crisis under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which is aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda, and promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The REDD+ project protects 177,899 hectares of high conservation value rainforest in the state of Pará, Brazil and will prevent net emissions of more than 20 million tCO2e over the project lifetime. It is a registered Code REDD+ project; is validated and verified against VCS and in 2012 attained CCBA Gold level accreditation. This project protects threatened tree species like the pau rosa (Brazilian rosewood), provides jobs in forest management and monitoring, supports education in agro-forestry techniques to enable the community to grow cash crops, protects at risk animals like the Giant Anteater, Golden Parakeet and Ka’apor Capuchin Monkey and provides secured land tenure to villages committed to conservation.

In addition to Mahindra Racing’s Net Zero Carbon benchmark, it is also pleased to announce it has pledged to the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework alongside the FIA and Formula E. This initiative aims at supporting and guiding sports actors in achieving global climate change goals.

By committing to the framework, Mahindra Racing has pledged to five key principles; to undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility, to reduce overall climate impact, to educate for climate action, to promote sustainable and responsible consumption and to advocate for climate action through communication.

These new achievements add to the team’s previous sustainability endeavours including:

• Becoming the first Formula E team in history to receive Three-Star Accreditation– the highest accolade in the FIA’s framework.
• Committing to planting trees in the Araku Valley region of India thanks to its Season 6 tree planting campaign. Mahindra Racing’s efforts are in tandem with Mahindra Group’s commitment which has a commitment to plant 1 million trees every year
• Partnering with One All Sports as its team kit supplier; a natural choice due to their shared vision and dedication to the use of sustainable materials, applications and processes

Dilbagh Gill
CEO & TEAM PRINCIPAL, MAHINDRA RACING

“We believe that ‘doing good’ goes beyond philanthropy and CSR, it is more than just random acts of kindness. ‘Doing good’ is a purpose, an attitude, and a way of life; it is our guide for conducting business and ourselves. As a team that is committed to finding credible, advanced and next generation mobility solutions while being kind to the planet. At Mahindra Racing, we pledge to greater ROCE, which, for us, stands for Return On Climate and Environment. This is ingrained into our ethos and a big part of the reason we are racing in Formula E. We have been on this path of reducing our impact on the planet since our birth in 2014 and six years later we are carbon neutral since inception. We are also certified with Three-Star Excellence in sustainability. To this end, our efforts are and will continue to be, in tandem with Mahindra Group’s commitment and quest to achieve group-wide carbon neutrality. We look forward to kickstarting season 7 with ROCE as our guiding principle, towards setting innovative, competitive yet sustainable mobility benchmarks for the world.”

Jamie Reigle,
CEO, FORMULA E

“It is a great achievement for Mahindra Racing to become certified net zero carbon since inception. Mahindra Racing has become a leader in sustainability across the sporting landscape and promotes sustainable business practices across their supply chain. As the first Formula E team to attain FIA Three-star Environmental Accreditation and the most recent team to sign the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework, they are the perfect partners in the fight against climate change. The first manufacturer to join the Formula E grid and now the first to commit to Gen3, we’re delighted to have a long and ongoing relationship with another organisation so aligned to our vision and values.”

Alexis Leroy
CEO, ALLCOT GROUP

“We are very proud and excited to be part of the Mahindra Racing sustainability team. Mahindra’s values and beliefs echoes our own. Sustainability or good management through Sustainable Development Goals are at the heart of Mahindra’s drive. It translates into these great achievements that we hope will inspire and lead to a virtuous competition among its pairs. Regardless, it sets great precedents that we aim to continue working and exceed whenever possible.”

In just over one week's time (Saturday 19 September), the 88th running of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans - round 7 of FIA WEC Season 8 - will get underway.

24 Hour of Le Mans: what’s new for 2020?

This year's rescheduled 24 Hours of Le Mans will look slightly different so FIA WEC identified some of the main changes ahead of next week's race...

Hyperpole The traditional qualifying session for Le Mans has been shaken up for 2020. There will now be two stages, designed to encourage sheer speed and spectacular track action.

Behind closed doors

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and for the first time in Le Mans history, this year’s event will be staged behind closed doors. Fans will be able to watch all the action from home on television or via various digital platforms including the official FIA WEC app. Full details including TV listings will be revealed early next week.

Memories of Le Mans: Filipe Albuquerque

In the run-up to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, we quizzed various WEC drivers about their past experiences from the legendary event.

This week we heard from United Autosports driver Filipe Albuquerque.

Hi Filipe, what is your favourite memory of competing at Le Mans? “I have a few good memories but the best one is my first ever stint in the race in 2015. The car was perfect. I was in P2 overall and I was catching the leader at something like two seconds a lap. I was just flying and at the same time I was also having fun. Back then I was beating the race lap record that was made without chicanes and on top of that, it was my birthday. But I must say I am still searching for the one and only great memory, which is to win Le Mans and to be on that podium.”

Memories of Le Mans: Richard Lietz

We also heard from Porsche GT Team’s Richard Lietz who will compete in his 14th Le Mans this September. He also has three class victories from this event, so certainly knows what it takes to win a gruelling 24 hour race.

Hi Richard, if you could go back in time and choose to compete in Le Mans on any year, what would it be and why? “I think 1998 would be a good year. The Porsche GT1 is one of my all-time favourite cars, working together with Norbert Singer and the Porsche works team would be my choice.”

Ben Keating's memories of Le Mans

From the LMGTE Am category, we also heard from Team Project 1's Ben Keating who is set to take part in his sixth Le Mans next week.

Hi Ben, if you could choose any two team-mates (dead or alive), to compete at Le Mans with who would they be and why? “I would have liked to have been the third driver for AJ Foyt and Dan Gurney in the Ford GT40 of 1967. An all-American team with such brilliant personalities and incredible driving skills in addition to the history of those two guys. Plus, the bonus of being the first to spray champagne from the podium!”

Toyota Gazoo Racing’s No.7 TS050 HYBRID trio of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José Maria Lopez won today’s sixth round of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the TOTAL 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.
Today’s race saw extremely changeable weather conditions including four safety car sessions due to intermittent rainfall and incidents out on track. After a week of extremely hot temperatures, the rain returned to Spa-Francorchamps where tyre choice played a major factor in today’s action-packed race. Rebellion Racing started on pole but the Swiss team suffered an early setback when Norman Nato lost valuable time due to high tyre pressure issues in the opening stint.

Today’s win for the Toyota Gazoo Racing marks the third win of the season for the No. 7 car (and fourth for the squad) and sees the No. 7 entry extend its lead at the top of the overall leaderboard to 12 points.

United Autosports storms to third consecutive LMP2 victory

British team United Autosports once again ruled supreme in the highly-competitive LMP2 category as its trio of drivers Phil Hanson, Filipe Albuquerque and Paul Di Resta claimed their third successive LMP2 victory in the ORECA 07 – Gibson.

AF Corse finish on top in LMGTE Am

LMGTE Am also provided plenty of action and lead changes but the supremely consistent No.83 AF Corse of François Perrodo, Emmanuel Collard and Nicklas Nielsen claimed victory after a hard six hours of action.
It was a second victory this season for the trio, and the No.83 became the first Ferrari to score multiple Am wins in a season since SMP Racing in 2015. The result stretches their lead at the head of the points table to 110 points, 12 ahead of third place finishers No.90 TF Sport.

The FIA WEC Panel of Stewards: What happens behind closed doors

“It’s with the Stewards.” “They have been called to the Stewards.” “It’s the decision of the Stewards.”
These phrases can often be heard at international motorsport meetings, but what exactly do they mean and what actually happens behind the closed doors of the Panel of Stewards at all rounds of the FIA World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans?
In order to find out more about the work of these FIA Officials and the extent to which they go to ensure parity, a fair hearing and justice for all, we spoke to the permanent Chairman of the Panel of Stewards for the WEC, Jean-Francois Veroux.  To read the interview click on the links below.
