10 March 2019, Hong Kong – The Monaco-based VENTURI Formula E Team celebrated the 50th Formula E race in style with their first ever race win as Edoardo MORTARA took first place at the fifth round of the 2018/19 Formula E Season.
Despite Envision Virgin Racing’s Sam BIRD initially celebrating the win with MORTARA in second place on the podium, a racing incident penalty for the Brit promoted the Swiss-Italian VENTURI driver to first place and heralded a landmark victory for the team. A fantastic weekend was topped off with teammate, Felipe MASSA, pushing his way through a tricky race to a strong finish in fifth place.

CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE

Fresh from their season first podium finish in Mexico City, VENTURI Formula E Team proved in Hong Kong that the consistency in their recent form is more down to hard work than chance with Swiss-Italian driver, Edoardo MORTARA, fighting his way up the grid from sixth position to take the top spot. Regarded as a street track master, MORTARA has previous form with winding harbour front track - Season 4 saw him take his first trip to the Formula E podium when he finished second at the Hong Kong ePrix.

Formula E’s first ever official ‘wet race’ resulted in a slippery track with the race featuring three safety cars and a red flag period following multiple crashes.

MORTARA’S team mate, Felipe MASSA, also put in a solid and steady performance during the race with his best finish so far this season. Taking full advantage of the red flag situation, MASSA’s fast working engineering crew were able to quickly fix damage done to the rear of his VENTURI VFE-05 allowing the Brazilian driver to continue his fight up the grid from ninth place in qualifying to finish fifth in the final race classification.

QUOTES

“The result today is fantastic!!! Fourth in Santiago, third in Mexico, now my first victory in Hong Kong! I’m so proud and finding out that I had won was an incredible feeling for me. The race was awesome and I've had a wonderful weekend - historically racing in Asia brings me so much luck - honestly, I’m over the moon and I couldn’t be happier. The team have done a brilliant job, they put in all the hours and pull out all the stops - this result is a tribute to their hard work. We started from quite far back this season but the guys are doing such an amazing job and improving race by race. This result is for them - I know that it will motivate them even more and I can’t wait to get back out on the track.”
Edoardo MORTARA, VENTURI Formula E Team driver

“Again another action filled race where so much happened. First and foremost, I am absolutely delighted for the team, Edo’s result is incredible and I am very happy for him. My race had a fantastic start and I gained two positions then a racing incident resulted in me losing several positions and damage to the rear of my car. Fortunately we had the red flag and managed to fix the problem with the suspension. The mechanics did a fantastic job to repair it so quickly and after the restart  the race was great. I managed to save the battery in a great way at the beginning, I had great race pace and I managed to overtake a few guys. P5 today is my best result so far but I still have in my mind that it could have been even better. Anyway, I'm so happy for the team - our first race win and again both cars finishing in the points - this is where we need to be!”
Felipe MASSA, VENTURI Formula E Team driver

“Our first race victory marks a really important milestone for the team, our President, Gildo PASTOR, has put a lot of faith and trust in us and to have delivered this victory for him is a proud moment for all of us. Both drivers did a great job this weekend, and the team capitalised on all the opportunities in the race. We were really lucky that we had the red flag so we could repair Felipe's car and credit to him for his fantastic recovery and P5 finish. We definitely benefited from others misfortune this weekend but that’s racing, it can be brutal and we have had our fair share of tough moments already this season, today is a very special day - I will be leaving Hong Kong one very happy Team Principal.”

6 March 2019, Monaco – Following Edoardo MORTARA’s third place podium finish in Mexico City, VENTURI Formula E Team heads to the fifth round of the 2018-2019 Formula E Championship in Hong Kong this week in strong spirits. With a break from the usual Saturday race format, this weekend sees the race action take place on Sunday 10th March.

SKYSCRAPERS AND SEASCAPES

The 1.860 km street circuit nestles between the stunning Victoria Bay and the impressive skyscraper-studded Hong Kong skyline. Formula E enjoys huge popularity in this territory, not only with fans but also with the motorsport fraternity who really look forward to this leg of the championship.

Featuring a more traditional track layout, the Hong Kong circuit presents a different proposition from the last race in Mexico City. With a noticeably short and winding track configuration, a strong qualifying performance will be more crucial than ever to a successful race in Hong Kong. Added to these challenges, the initial weather forecasts indicate that there is a chance of rain on Sunday 10 March which will no doubt add to the on-track action.

GOOD VIBRATIONS

Edoardo MORTARA makes his return to Hong Kong having just clocked up his second  podium finish in Formula E (third place in Mexico). His first podium and second place in a race came in Hong Kong in December 2017 - so the Swiss-Italian driver is more motivated than ever to put in a solid performance.

Felipe MASSA, who qualified in third place on the grid in Mexico City, is looking forward to his premiere lap of the Hong Kong track. MASSA, like his teammate, has been spending plenty of time between the races in the simulator in order to familiarise himself with the track and to work on energy management strategies.

QUOTES

“I’m going into this race calmly and very focused on my preparations. We’re coming off the back of two good results, and we’re heading in the right direction. The team is ultra-determined. Now we just have to hope everything goes well over the weekend. I’m looking forward to getting back out on the track.”
Edoardo MORTARA, VENTURI Formula E Team driver

“This will be my first time visiting Hong Kong. I can’t wait to get there, especially as I know I have a lot of fans there. I’ve familiarised myself with the track in the simulator, in order to be as ready as possible on race day. We’ve come a long way since Santiago and the team dynamic is very good - this weekend we’ll continue to push and we hope to have the best race possible.”
Felipe MASSA, VENTURI Formula E Team driver

“Round four in Mexico was a highlight for VENTURI and a very proud moment for me as Team Principal, the team worked enormously hard for that result. Following a successful in-season test day in Mexico we returned to Monaco with our focus fixed firmly on preparing for Hong Kong and the drivers and team have been hard at work maintaining the momentum from Mexico. This weekend, I want to see us continue to improve and showcase the capabilities of both our drivers and the reliability of the car.”
Susie WOLFF, VENTURI Formula E Team Principal

Free practice, qualifying and the race itself will take place over the course of a single day, Sunday 10 March 2019. To keep up with all the action, follow VENTURI Formula E Team on Twitter: @VenturiFE.

Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and co-organised by the Tourism Commission, the “International Light Art Display” will bring a new batch of light art installations to town. The new creations all share the theme of Love and Romance and will be displayed together with some of the existing popular light art installations starting from tomorrow, 18 January, until 24 February. The light art installations along with the beautiful setting of the Victoria Harbour will surely turn the Central harbourfront into the most romantic photo background for couples and will definitely become a popular social media “check-in” hotspot during Valentine’s Day and Spring Lantern Festival.

There will be 15 light art installations created by local and overseas artists at the “International Light Art Display”, among which seven art installations are new pieces created with the theme of Love and Romance. In addition, some of the installations are interactive. Among the new light art installations, three were created by overseas artists, including a piece titled “Bunch of Tulips” from Hungary, that greets visitors with a colourful bunch of giant LED flowers, and the interactive “Birds Fly Around With You” from Japan, that illuminates more bird sculptures when more people step into the magical circle. In addition, there are four local installations, including “Geometry of Love”, which inspires from colourful stained glass church windows to reflect geometric heart-shaped patterns on the ground, and “Hello, Stranger”, where the gaze of two activates 60 seconds of interactive LED lighting and music.

The Light Tunnel at the Tamar Park in Admiralty will be dressed in pink to echo the theme of Love and Romance. The 50-metre tunnel will display multiple heart shapes to grab the attention of lovers.

On top of the new installations, eight popular existing installations, which have been on display from the very beginning of the Festival in November 2018, including “Angels of Freedom”, “Talking Heads” and “Tapping”, will still be there. The “International Light Art Display” is a major component of the “Hong Kong Pulse Light Festival”, which is a brand new mega-event launched in November 2018. This exhibition will still be displayed at the Central and Western District Promenade (Central Section) and lighting time will be maintained at 5pm to 11pm daily.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, one of Hong Kong’s most celebrated festivals, is fast approaching on 24 September (the 15th day of the 8th month on the Chinese Lunar Calendar). Said to have evolved from a moon-worshipping ceremony ahead of the autumn harvest, the festival provides a peek inside Hong Kong’s long-held traditions.

During this annual festival, visitors will witness the city coming alive, as the century-old Fire Dragon Dance swirls through Tai Hang and lanterns illuminate the sky.

Paying tribute to the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations of old, Tai Hang residents has gathered to take part in the three-day Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance during 23 to 25 September 2018. People from across the city head to the dance to enjoy the roaring festivities, which were inscribed on China’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011.

The tradition is thought to have emerged in the 19th century, following a typhoon and a plague that devastated Tai Hang. By parading a fierce dragon through the streets, the villagers believed they could ward off evil spirits and bad luck.

Today, the experience promises an explosion of drums, gongs and incense, as nearly 300 trained participants carry a 67-metre dragon covered in glowing joss sticks through the streets. The first thing you’ll notice as the dragon flies by is its 70-kilogramme head, made of sheet metal, straw and rattan, with two electric torches for eyes – that’s a face you’ll never forget!

Hong Kong – Two spectacular light shows over Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour – the new version of the internationally acclaimed nightly multi-media light show A Symphony of Light and the winter version of the Hong Kong Pulse Light Show – unveiled tonight (1st December 2017). The two world-class shows, best viewed from the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, will brighten up Hong Kong’s Christmas with dynamic lighting effects and the illusion of an icy atmosphere at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The new version of A Symphony of Lights features dynamic rays of light sent out in rhythm from 40 buildings and locations on both sides of the Victoria Harbour. The new show incorporates a variety of exciting lighting effects such as coloured searchlights, lasers, and all-new beam lights sent out like a special fan-shaped lighting effect from the roof of the Central Government Offices and the Revenue Tower. Ten LED panels on a number of harbourside buildings are for the first time joining the multi-media show, displaying images and messages to encourage audience participation.

The show is complemented by music from Asia’s leading classical orchestra the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, providing visitors with a thrilling and unforgettable sound-and-light experience. The 10-minute show begins at 8pm every evening.

Immediately after A Symphony of Lights, the winter version of Hong Kong Pulse Light Show begins at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Spectators can view it from the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza. The 3D projection show begins with a snowstorm which covers the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in snow and ice and blows away the numbers on the Clock Tower, stopping time just before Christmas arrives.

An ingenious dragon then sets out to find the missing numbers which are scattered across Hong Kong landmarks. The dragon eventually finds them and restarts time to save Christmas. During the show, the piazza is decorated with snowing effect along with glowing LED balls and a giant crystal ball. The 8-minute performance runs from 1st to 28th December 2017.

‘Our Fans’ by Sir Peter Blake takes up residence on Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London’s Knightsbridge façade during part of the extensive renovation of this historic hotel.

Hong Kong, 17 January 2017 -- Sir Peter Blake, a leading figure in the art world, and often referred to as the ‘Godfather of British Pop Art’, has been commissioned by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group to create a collage which will cover Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London’s iconic façade during part of the hotel’s comprehensive phased renovation.
The immense collage entitled Our Fans, has been created to provide an eye-catching diversion along Knightsbridge. Our Fans, the largest artwork Sir Peter Blake has ever created, is a collage of 100 prominent faces, from Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren to Joanna Lumley and Jenny Packham. All are regular guests at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London as well as fans of the Group’s hotels around the world.
“Some of my first works were collages of crowds of people; this piece is in the spirit of The Beatles 1967Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album,” said Sir Peter Blake, the artist responsible for this iconic album cover. It is therefore entirely apt that Sir Paul McCartney and fellow Beatles' bandmate Ringo Starr should feature in the poster, during the 50th anniversary of the album.
The collage has become Blake’s trademark format and one that he has returned to time and again over the years.  “This artwork was very different to my usual way of working”, he said. “A collage is very time consuming and laborious, but this was more a matter of arranging the figures and making them work together - making sure no one had a cut-off shoulder or missing legs - that’s the skill of it. It was an amazing project to work on. Hopefully, people passing by will try to spot celebrities they recognize,” he added.
Displayed prominently on the front of the building, this striking work is a visual treat. “We are delighted to showcase this original piece by such a talented artist in London, the home of our European flagship hotel,” said Jill Kluge, Mandarin Oriental’s Group Director of Brand Communications. “Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park is part of the fabric of London life, and this exciting renovation project is designed to confirm it as one of the leading luxury hotels in the world. Sir Peter Blake’s artistic masterpiece not only pays tribute to the city, but also celebrates the Group’s global reach, in a truly original way,” she added.
