  • Toyota headline 10-strong LMP1 category
  • BMW strengthens powerful GT World Championship to 10 challengers
  • Three constructors go head-to-head in LMP2 in hands of teams old and new
  • Multi-marque LMGTE Am class boosted to 9 for Super Season

Toyota headline 10-strong LMP1 category
Six months ago, few imagined that 10 LMP1 cars would be lining up for the start of the 2018-2019 season, with a two-time F1 World Champion among the drivers!
Toyota Gazoo Racing’s commitment to the development of hybrid technology, and its dedication to making ever-better road cars using the knowledge and experience gained in the WEC, sees it extend its engagement in the World Endurance Championship for the full Super Season.
The Japanese manufacturer recently announced that Fernando Alonso would be joining the team for the duration, allowing the Spanish F1 champion to fulfil his desire to try and claim the Triple Crown in motorsport.  His presence alongside the existing, super-strong, international driver line up will undoubtedly attract a host of new fans and media interest....
BMW strengthens powerful GT World Championship to 10 challengers
Boosted by the FIA World Endurance Championship titles for GTE Drivers and Manufacturers, the competition in the LMGTE Pro class will be hotter and tighter than ever with the addition of BMW to the ranks.
The German marque’s new BMW M8 GTE, with an experienced, race-winning but WEC-unproven crew of drivers, made its race debut just weeks ago and will be going head to head from April’s Prologue (Circuit Paul Ricard, 6/7 April) onwards with some of the world’s most prestigious luxury car marques....
Three constructors go head-to-head in LMP2 in hands of teams old and new
The LMP2 grid will consist of seven entries but, in contrast to last year, there are three different chassis constructors represented through the ORECA 07, Dallara P217 and Ligier JSP217.  Signatech Alpine’s A470, while individually named, is an ORECA 07 design.  The new LMP2 regulations introduced in 2017 offered customers a significant increase in performance which provided thrilling and close competition throughout the entire 2017 season – something which is sure to be repeated in the Super Season....
Multi-marque LMGTE Am class boosted to 9 for Super Season
The LMGTE Am class features three different brands among the nine entries, the number being a significant boost compared to previous seasons.   The competitors include the 2017 class champions from Aston Martin Racing, Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda, plus a second Vantage entered by WEC debutant TF Sport....

FIA World Endurance Championship announces results of WEC Global Fan Survey

The WEC Global Fan Survey launched towards the end of September received an incredible response from over 54,000 fans around the world, and the responses have now been independently analysed and compiled. As promised by FIA WEC CEO, Gerard Neveu, the results have today been presented in Bahrain just ahead of the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain, the final round of the 2017 season.
The aim of the survey – the largest conducted on the WEC’s discipline of endurance racing among motorsport fans around the world – was to get them to give their views on a comprehensive range of subjects including the number of races, where they are held, the spectacle of the WEC, favourite brands and much more. The survey was managed by Motorsport Network in conjunction with Nielsen Sports on behalf of the WEC.
The feedback has been extremely encouraging, giving the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), promoter of the WEC, and the organisation team behind the championship, valuable tools with which to move forward into the future.

The far-reaching aftershocks of the Chinese-entered team’s incredible achievements at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June are still reaching the land represented now by not just one, but two, Chinese teams.

But, for team co-founder David Cheng, the plan to accelerate interest in endurance racing and the FIA WEC in China is just as satisfying as challenging for silverware.

Hollywood superstar and former WEC driver Patrick Dempsey will wave off the 26 entrants for this weekend’s 6 Hours of Fuji. The seventh round of the FIA World Endurance Championship will begin at 11h00 (local time) on Sunday 15 October
Fuji Speedway has special significance for the owner/partner of the Dempsey-Proton Racing team as it was the scene of his triumphant LMGTE Am victory in 2015 which, alongside his podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans that same year, ranks as the highlight of his motorsport career.
Patrick Dempsey will be in Japan to promote the Dempsey Challenge which is being staged in support of the Dempsey Center charity for the fight against cancer. During this time he will make a film about his win in Japan and take part in a number of events over the weekend as well as mentor the young drivers on his racing team.
To emphasise breast cancer awareness month, which was initiated by the “pink ribbon foundation”, the livery of the No.77 Dempsey Proton Racing Porsche 911 RSR will be styled pink for the 6 Hours of Fuji.

Less than a week to go to complete WEC fan survey: Get clicking now!

An amazing 45,000 fans of endurance racing and motorsport in general have so far completed the FIA WEC’s global fan survey and now, with just under a week remaining before the closing date, this is the last chance to win the superb prize of two VIP tickets to the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans. Don’t miss the opportunity and get clicking now [https://wecsurvey.motorsport.com]!
Responses over the first three weeks of the survey have come in from 169 different countries across the world, and show that endurance racing fans are very loyal, having typically followed the discipline for multiple years.
We particularly want to hear from our fans in the Far East, Russia, and southern Europe and every opinion – no matter where or who it comes from – is valued and will help to shape the future of endurance racing.
As well as commenting on favourite circuits and the preferred length of races, fans have spoken out loudly and clearly about the marques they want to see racing in the WEC – with the GTE manufacturers being among the most popular. Key for manufacturer and private teams alike are fans’ views on the WEC’s top five brand values and leading these is that the championship should remain technological, competitive, innovative, exciting and global.
The closing date for the survey is midnight on Tuesday 17 October and the full results will be published at the final round of the 2017 season, the 6 Hours of Bahrain between 16-18 November.

Mexico’s founding fathers of endurance racing: Pedro and Ricardo RodriguezMexico’s founding fathers of endurance racing: Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez
The entry list for the second running of the 6 Hours of Mexico presented by AT&T has been revealed, and there is much on offer for South and Central American fans to cheer about.
With just over five weeks to go until the big event at the impressive Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez facility, located in the heart of one of the world’s most culturally rich and popular capital cities, 26 cars are on the provisional entry list for the fifth round of the 2017 WEC– all guaranteed to provide excitement and entertainment for the thousands of fans due to attend.
For the first of the five overseas races on the 2017 calendar, we will see Porsche and Toyota go head to head in LMP1 with the Japanese manufacturer keener than ever to close the gap in the points balance after Porsche’s 1-2 success at the Nürburgring race. Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard won in Mexico last year – will they do it again or will the balance tip towards Toyota Gazoo Racing who undoubtedly have the pace but are lacking a little luck?
Among the stars displaying their talents in Mexico will be three-time FIA World Touring Car Champion José Mariá López of Toyota.  The Argentinian can’t wait to be at what will effectively be his ‘home’ race, or the one nearest to his home in South America, and experience the fantastic ambience and passion from the Mexican spectators.
All the LMP1 cars, now without the privateer ByKolles team which has elected to concentrate on development for 2018, will be in the mix at the front of the field and capitalising on the long straight and high altitude of the Mexico City track.
There will be 9 entries in this super-competitive class, with just the omission of the second Signatech Alpine car from the full season entry list.  The increased power and improved aerodynamics in 2017 have offered up some nail-biting battles in this category, and the Mexican fans can look forward to action, noise and maybe even some drama.
LMP2 features the only Mexican driver in the field thus far, Roberto Gonzalez in the No. 25 CEFC Manor TRS Racing ORECA 07 Gibson.  The older brother of race promoter Ricardo Gonzalez will line up with Simon Trummer and Vitaly Petrov – the trio determined to get their first podium of the season in front of Roberto’s home crowd.
Adding extra fervour for the Mexican fans will be two famous South American racingnames – Nelson Piquet Jr and Bruno Senna, both competing for the Vaillante Rebellion team, and Senna’s No.31 holding second place in the LMP2 championship behind the seemingly invincible Jackie Chan DC Racing team.
Andre Negrão is set to replace Matt Rao at the wheel of the No.36 Signatech Alpine Matmut entry. The Brazilian driver teams with defending LMP2 Champions Nicolas Lapierre and Gustavo Menezes in the squad’s lead Alpine A470 Gibson.
The Mexican fans can anticipate another sensational battle for supremacy in the LMGTE classes as the world’s most popular and luxurious marques come together once again in the ultra-close Pro and Am categories.
The quest for the GT FIA World Endurance Manufacturers Championship sees Ferrari and Ford currently tied on 135 points, with Aston Martin and Porsche also within touching distance of the lead.  Ferrari and Ford will of course be looking to maximise their turbocharged engines in the rarefied Mexican atmosphere, but it was an Aston Martin which took victory in 2016.  Can they do it again, to the delight of Brazilian Daniel Serra’s Latin American fans, or maybe it will be the turn of the new-for-2017, mid-engined Porsche 911 RSR?
In LMGTE Am there is an incredibly tight battle for the top of the points’ tables, with the crews from Dempsey Proton Racing (No.77 Porsche 911 RSR) and Clearwater Racing (No.61 Ferrari 488 GTE) tied on 88 points at the head of the classifications.  Just two points further back is the No.98 Aston Martin Racing trio – all three crews having taken a win so far this year.
The scene is almost set, and the drivers and teams that make up entry list for one of the FIA’s most popular championships are ready to return to Mexico for further adventures.  The world’s fastest and most exciting endurance racing was introduced to some of the most passionate and dedicated motorsport fans in 2016.  With WEC races such as have been witnessed at Spa and Le Mans this year, open paddocks, pit walks and autograph sessions, entertainment for all the family on and off the track is guaranteed.
The action will begin on Friday 1st September with practice on the 2.674-mile circuit, with the race scheduled to begin at 12 noon local time on Sunday 3rd September.
