FIA World Endurance Championship announces results of WEC Global Fan Survey

The WEC Global Fan Survey launched towards the end of September received an incredible response from over 54,000 fans around the world, and the responses have now been independently analysed and compiled. As promised by FIA WEC CEO, Gerard Neveu, the results have today been presented in Bahrain just ahead of the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain, the final round of the 2017 season.
The aim of the survey – the largest conducted on the WEC’s discipline of endurance racing among motorsport fans around the world – was to get them to give their views on a comprehensive range of subjects including the number of races, where they are held, the spectacle of the WEC, favourite brands and much more. The survey was managed by Motorsport Network in conjunction with Nielsen Sports on behalf of the WEC.
The feedback has been extremely encouraging, giving the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), promoter of the WEC, and the organisation team behind the championship, valuable tools with which to move forward into the future.

GT FIA World Endurance Drivers Championship down to the wire

Seven teams will head to the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain with a chance of winning FIA World Endurance Championship LMGTE Pro and AM titles, in what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the 2017 season.
Firstly, a look at the FIA GT Drivers’ title chase, and the battle for the LMGTE Pro Teams Trophy.
After an action-packed 6 Hours of Shanghai, the battle for the GT FIA World Endurance Drivers Championship remains wide open, with drivers from four cars from three manufacturers still in with a chance.

Aston Martin, Dempsey-Proton or Clearwater Racing in GTE Am?

The fight for the LMGTE Am Team and Drivers’ Trophies has been the tightest yet seen with just 11 points separating the top three Teams and 19 points between the top three driver pairings.
A third victory of the season in Shanghai took Aston Martin Racing trio Pedro Lamy, Mathias Lauda and Paul Dalla Lana back to the top of the standings, 10 points clear of the Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche of Matteo Cairoli, Marvin Dienst and Christian Ried.
From a deficit of one-point heading into the weekend, the No.98 Aston Martin crew turned the title race on its head with a maximum 26-point score, meaning they can wrap up a long-awaited first championship with third place in Bahrain, even if the Porsche wins and takes pole position.
The Clearwater Racing Ferrari 488 GTE of Matt Griffin, Keita Sawa and Weng Sun Mok remains in mathematical contention despite a costly collision with the Jackie Chan DC Racing ORECA of Tristan Gommendy in China. However, they will need their main rivals to strike serious trouble if they are to bring home a fairy-tale title in the Singaporean team’s first season in the WEC.

Aston Martin bids farewell to the Vantage

It may be the oldest car in the field, but the Aston Martin Vantage will bow out of the FIA World Endurance Championship at the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain as one of the series’ most enduringly successful machines.
Built at Prodrive in Banbury (some 15 miles/24 km from Silverstone), the Vantage GTE can trace its roots back to 2008, but has continued winning in its final year before being replaced by a newer model next season.
Aston Martin Racing celebrated pole in both the LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am classes in China, while a third GTE Am victory of the season put Pedro Lamy, Paul Dalla Lana and Mathias Lauda in command of the title race as the final race of the year approaches.

A dominant victory in the penultimate round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship for Toyota was not enough to prevent Porsche from winning the World Manufacturers’ Championship today in Shanghai.
Second place for the No.2 Porsche 919 Hybrid crew of Timo Bernhard, Earl Bamber and Brendon Hartley gave them a well-deserved 2017 FIA World Endurance Drivers’ title with one round remaining. It is Bernhard and Hartley’s second championship title (first in 2015) and Bamber’s first.
Toyota’s No.8 TS050 HYBRID of Kazuki Nakajima, Anthony Davidson and Sébastien Buemi led a convincing display by the Japanese manufacturer, although the result could have been very different in terms of the race result and the championship situation had the No.7 Toyota of José Maria Lopez not clashed with one of the leading GTE Pro cars in the final hour.
The result saw the Japanese car forced to pit and the two Porsche 919 Hybrids move up to second and third, while the delayed Toyota ultimately came in fourth. It was Toyota Gazoo Racing’s fourth win of the season meaning that the eight races have been completely split between the Japanese marque and their rivals Porsche, with one round remaining.
Rounding out the podium in Shanghai was the No.1 Porsche 919 Hybrid of Neel Jani, André Lotterer and Nick Tandy. Their race was compromised in the first hour when Tandy slowed with a throttle sensor issue.
It was an ultra-successful day for Porsche as they also took the FIA World Endurance Manufacturers Championship, and as with the Drivers’ title it was also the third consecutive time Porsche has lifted the trophy.
An enthusiastic crowd of 58,000 spectators over the weekend at Shanghai International Circuit saw a memorable event and went home having witnessed an incredible race which was full of action, drama and tension.

Vaillante Rebellion take epic LMP2 contest

One of the best ever LMP2 races was won by the No.31 Vaillante Rebellion squad in Shanghai as Bruno Senna, Nicolas Prost and Julien Canal triumphed for the third time this season.
In a race of incident and excitement Senna laid the foundations for the win which takes him and Canal to the lead of the championship by four points (Prost having missed a race earlier in the year).
Their chief rivals during the race were the Jackie Chan DC Racing trio of Oliver Jarvis, Ho-Pin Tung and Thomas Laurent. The three-time category winners had seemed to have built a race-winning platform after a stellar double stint from Jarvis, but then a fraught final two hours saw a collision between their No.38 ORECA 07 and the No.26 G-Drive Racing car. Damage to the front of their car meant they eventually finished in fourth position.
Runners-up in Shanghai today were the Signatech Alpine crew of Nicolas Lapierre, Gustavo Menezes and André Negrão. Today’s result keeps Menezes in outside contention for the LMP2 Drivers’ crown.
Making it two Vaillante Rebellion entries in the top three was the No.13 car of Nelson Piquet Jr, David Heinemeier-Hansson and Mathias Beche. They recovered from contact on the opening lap to score their second podium position of the season, with Dane Heinemeier Hansson having a particularly strong race.
The final round of the 2017 WEC season is the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain which will race into the night on Saturday 18th November

Kobayashi and Conway take Shanghai pole for Toyota

Toyota took pole position for the 6 Hours of Shanghai this afternoon as Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi combined to head all challengers and secure the No.7 Toyota TS050 HYBRID’s fourth top spot of the season. The average time of 1m42.832s was enough to seal the pole after Kobayashi had set an ultimate best of 1m42.526s.
Joining the No.7 Toyota on the front row for tomorrow’s rolling start will be the No.1 Porsche 919 Hybrid which was driven by Nick Tandy and André Lotterer in qualifying. Tandy set the early pace but the session was slightly compromised when Lotterer had one of his laps deleted after violating track limits at Turn 16.
The No.8 Toyota, which is aiming to stop the No.2 Porsche crew taking the Drivers’ title this weekend, starts third as Sébastien Buemi and Anthony Davidson shared the cockpit in the qualifying session.
Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber continued their all-Kiwi qualifying attack but ultimately came unstuck as Bamber suffered a mid-session spin. This meant that the leaders of the points classification will start fourth.

Danes gain pole for Aston Martin

In one of the most important qualifying sessions of the season, due to the crucial extra one point available towards the GT FIA World Endurance Championship, Danish duo Marco Sorensen and Nicki Thiim took their first pole position of the season at Shanghai in their No.95 Aston Martin.
The pair averaged 1m59.697s average, which put them just over two tenths up on the Porsche pair of Michael Christensen and Kevin Estre’s 1m59.916s.
Points standing leaders and winners of the last two FIA World Endurance Championship events, James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi of AF Corse Ferrari, placed third as they look to extend their advantage in the penultimate race of the season tomorrow
The No.67 Ford GT of Harry Tincknell and Andy Priaulx made it four manufacturers in the top four positions.

Vaillante Rebellion's Senna and Canal claim LMP2 pole

In LMP2 the Vaillante Rebellion duo of Bruno Senna and Julien Canal took a first category pole of the season for the No.31 car.
Senna set the quickest overall time, but it was Canal’s lap which confirmed the pole as the Frenchman, who is aiming to become a double LMP2 champion this season, drove a faultless final sector to even eclipse Senna’s earlier benchmark.
A fine second place was taken by the G-Drive Racing car, driven by WEC newcomer Nico Muller and recently crowned ELMS champion Léo Roussel.

Lamy and Dalla Lana maintain Aston Martin record at Shanghai!

The LMGTE Am pole fell to the No.98 Aston Martin Racing pairing of Pedro Lamy and Paul Dalla Lana. It was the sixth time the pair has taken pole this season and Lamy celebrated a fourth consecutive top spot in as many years at the Chinese track.
The extra point gained by the No.98 ensured that they are now level with the Dempsey Proton Racing drivers going in to tomorrow's race.

More exciting new has today been revealed regarding future entrants to the LMP1 category in the FIA WEC!
In Shanghai, at a press conference hosted by CEFC China and attended by senior representatives from CEFC China, Talent Racing Sports (TRS), Graeme Lowdon from Manor and Gérard Neveu, CEO of the WEC, it was announced that the team will enter the LMP1 category in the 2018/2019 Super Season.

Gérard Neveu commented: “TRS and Manor, together with the partnership with CEFC this year, are a perfect fit. How Chinese interest in Endurance Racing is expanding...

...An interview with Jackie Chan DC Racing's David Cheng about the increasing interest in motorsport in China.
The far-reaching aftershocks of the Chinese-entered team’s incredible achievements at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June are still reaching the land represented now by not just one, but two, Chinese teams.
As the FIA WEC heads to Shanghai for the next round of a fascinating 2017 season, the Jackie Chan DC Racing squad has a 10-point advantage in both the LMP2 Drivers’ and Teams’ standings. But, for team co-founder David Cheng, the plan to accelerate interest in endurance racing and the FIA WEC in China is just as satisfying as challenging for silverware.

For the eighth round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship, the WEC family travels to the Pearl of the Orient and the impressive Shanghai International Circuit on the outskirts of the country's biggest city and its global financial hub.
Following the rain-drenched and weather-shortened last round in Japan, which shook up and tightened the championship positions in all classes, the 26 competitors will be keen to have a dry and uninterrupted 6 Hours of Shanghai as some title battles reach their final, exciting stages.
For others, every single point will count right to the end of the season and some may even wish to have another wet race! The 5.451km (3.387mile), 16 turn track is technically challenging and known to be hard on tyre wear so strategy will be more important than ever in the fight for success.
Porsche going for third consecutive World Manufacturers Championship
Toyota’s 1-2 result in Fuji slowed Porsche’s bid for a third successive FIA World Endurance Manufacturers Championship and reduced the gap between them to 58.5 points.  With two victories each in the last five years (and one to Audi), who will come out on top in Shanghai?
There will no changes to the driver line ups on either team, and the battle between all four hybrid-powered cars is likely to be fierce.
Victory for the No.8 Toyota TS050 HYBRID crew of Kazuki Nakajima, Sébastien Buemi and Anthony Davidson in Japan has closed the gap in the World Endurance Drivers’ Championship to 39 points to leaders Brendon Hartley, Earl Bamber and Timo Bernhard and there’s all to play for in China.

Home interest in LMP2

Vaillante Rebellion’s win in Fuji has closed the gap to long-time LMP2 class leaders to just 10 points, but all eyes in China will be on the two teams with a home interest – Jackie Chan DC Racing, which head the LMP2 FIA World Endurance Teams Trophy race, and CEFC Manor TRS Racing.
Team owner and global movie star Jackie Chan will be present in Shanghai to support local drivers David Cheng and Ho-Pin Tung and the whole team, and the No.38 ORECA 07 Gibson crew will be keen to stretch the gap to the chasing Vaillante Rebellion and Signatech Alpine Matmut teams behind them in the points’ battle.
CEFC Manor TRS Racing will undoubtedly be keen to entertain its many interested guests, Chinese sponsors and partners and hope for a less eventful race than in Fuji.
The only driver change in LMP2 since Fuji is the addition of Swiss DTM driver Nico Müller – making his WEC debut – alongside Roman Rusinov and Pierre Thiriet in the No.26 G-Drive Racing entry.  As the Russian driver and his team have enjoyed two LMP2 class wins in the last four years in Shanghai, don’t count them out.

LMGTE classes closer than ever

Ferrari now holds a 47-point lead over Porsche in the GT FIA World Endurance Manufacturers Championship following its success in Fuji, but ironically it has never won in the LMGTE Pro class in Shanghai.  Aston Martin and Porsche have taken two wins each, and last year victory went to Ford.
There are no changes to the strong driver line ups in the LMGTE Pro category, and leaders of the GT Drivers’ Championship Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado of AF Corse Ferrari – who celebrated their third (and second consecutive) win of the season in Japan – will be looking to extend their lead over the Porsche GT pairing of Frederic Makowiecki and Richard Lietz who continue on their improving trajectory as the season progresses.
In LMGTE Am it is now even closer between the teams at the top and each race is as unpredictable as the next!  Just three points now separate the championship-leading Clearwater Racing team from Singapore – at what will be almost a home race – from Dempsey Proton Racing and Aston Martin Racing.  Will these three lead the way in Shanghai, or will Spirit of Race repeat its Japanese success?
Gulf Racing’s owner driver Mike Wainwright is forced to miss another round due to business commitments and his place will be taken in Shanghai by the very experienced WEC entrant from the United Arab Emirates, Khaled Al Qubaisi who makes a welcome return to the paddock.

Toyota Gazoo Racing took a memorable 1-2 finish at their home race this afternoon after a dramatic seventh round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship at Fuji Speedway.
In challenging wet and foggy conditions Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Anthony Davidson took the No.8 Toyota TS 050 Hybrid to victory. They headed home the sister No.7 Toyota driven by Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Jose-Maria Lopez.
Toyota seemed to have a tyre performance throughout the weather affected race which saw six Safety Car periods, one Full Course Yellow and two red flag periods in an eventful race.
The result means that the destination of this year's drivers' title is still not known as the leading No.2 Posrche trio of Brendon Hartley, Earl Bamber and Timo Bernhard finished in fourth place. The gap between them and the No.8 Toyota crew is now 39 points with 52 to play for in the last two races of the season.
Rounding out the podium was the No.1 Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Andre Lotterer, Neel Jani and Nick Tandy.
Andre Lotterer started the race but suffered contact with the back of Buemi’s Toyota. A broken dive plane from his 919 Hybrid affected his pace and he soon fell back to fourth position. However, after taking a new front bodywork section Neel Jani and Nick Tandy fought back and were in contention to challenge for the win before the multiple stoppages for rain and fog came.

Ferrari take clean sweep in LMGTE to increase lead in GT World Championship

Ferrari claimed maximum points in the LMGTE Pro and Am categories today at a severely weather-disrupted 6 Hours of Fuji, the 7th round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship. The race was eventually stopped with 4 hours 24 minutes and 50 seconds on the clock.
AF Corse Ferrari’s James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi took their No.51 Ferrari 458 GTE to first place in the LMGTE Pro category and their third win of the season, eventually finishing just 0.96s ahead of the No.91 Porsche 911 RSR of Frédéric Makowiecki and Richard Lietz.
In third place was the second Porsche GT, the No.92 of Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen, with the No.66 Ford Chip Ganassi GT, No.71 Ferrari 458 GTE and the No.97 Aston Martin Vantage taking the remaining positions in the top six.
The race was disrupted by six safety car periods and two red flag stoppages during an afternoon which saw fog and rain cover the Fuji Speedway track frequently, and in different intensities. Low visibility was the reason for both the red flag periods, with drivers’ safety being paramount at all times.
Calado and Pier Guido now lead the GT FIA World Endurance Drivers’ Championship and Ferrari has extended its lead in the GT Manufacturers’ title race to 47 points. Porsche has overtaken Ford for second place after the American manufacturer had a tough weekend and were not able to follow up their 2016 victory.

Vaillante Rebellion comes through for 2nd win of the season

LMP2 saw the Vaillante Rebellion crew of Bruno Senna, Nicolas Prost and Julien Canal take their second victory of the season.
Bruno Senna and Nicolas Prost completed epic multiple stints at the wheel of the No.31 car to lead home the Signatech Alpine car of Nicolas Lapierre, Gustavo Menezes and Andre Negrao.
Completing the LMP2 podium was the points leading No.38 Jackie Chan DC Racing car of Oliver Jarvis, Ho-Pin Tung and Thomas Laurent. They still lead the LMP2 points table but now by a reduced lead of 10pts to Senna and Canal.
The race featured a spectacular and controversial incident between CEFC Manor TRS Racing driver Jan-Eric Vergne and No.13 Vaillante Rebellion racer Matthias Beche in the fourth hour. The two touched several times before Beche impacted the barriers.
51,000 dedicated fans witnessed the action at Fuji in difficult conditions, cementing the reputation of Japanese fans as some of the most passionate in the world of motorsport.

Spirit of Race take first WEC victory in LMGTE Am

For the 51,000 passionate Japanese fans coming to Fuji Speedway over the three-day weekend, there was just as much close competition and excitement in the LMGTE Am category for them to witness, particularly in today’s race.
Taking a first win of the season and a first victory in the WEC was the Spirit of Race Ferrari trio of Thomas Flohr, Francesco Castellacci and Miguel Molina. The No.54 Ferrari 488 GTE was 1.137s ahead of the class pole-sitting No.61 Clearwater Ferrari of Weng Sun Mok, Matt Griffin and local Japanese driver Keita Sawa at the second red flag which was deployed at 15:30 local time. The race was eventually not re-started as weather conditions continue to deteriorate.
Third in class was the No.77 Dempsey Proton Porsche 911 RSR – with team owner Patrick Dempsey present in Japan to see their podium finish – sporting a pink ribbon livery in support of the Dempsey Center cancer charity.
Next stop on the calendar is the 6 Hours of Shanghai on Sunday 5th November, the 8th round of the 9-race 2017 season.
