Formula E confirms the return of the 2019/20 season with a six-race title decider in Berlin

A SIX-RACE SHOWDOWN
Following a 110 day break from racing as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Formula E has today confirmed that it will resume the 2019/20 season with a six-race season finale in Berlin.
Racing on the Flughafen Tempelhof Circuit, three double-header events will take place in quick succession on August 5/6, 8/9 and 12/13 to conclude the series’ sixth season of competition.
Each pair of races in this nine-day period will be held on a different circuit configuration which will allow for Formula E’s acclaimed unpredictable and high-octane racing to continue, with each layout presenting a fresh strategic challenge to teams.

SAFETY FIRST
To ensure the safe conclusion of Season 6, Formula E has been working in close consultation with the FIA and the championship’s teams, including ROKiT Venturi Racing.
For the season conclusion, strict safety measures will be implemented in order to mitigate risk, with only essential staff travelling to the event which will take place behind closed doors.
In accordance with guidelines from the German government, a maximum of 1,000 people will be allowed on site while coronavirus testing prior to races will be mandatory.
On-site screening will take place daily upon arrival to the circuit while the use of face masks, social distancing, and limited movement across workspaces will be actively enforced.

GAME ON
With five races completed to date, 288 points are still available to teams as per Formula E’s revised 11-event calendar.
Notching 34 points to date through the services of Edoardo Mortara and Felipe Massa, ROKiT Venturi Racing is one of only three teams to record points in every race this season.
Presently holding P8 in the Teams’ Championship, the Monegasque marque is only 64 points adrift of present leaders DS Techeetah, meaning that everything is still to play for this August.

To mark World Environment Day this Friday, 5 June, Mahindra Racing is extending its Season 6 tree planting initiative to the ABB Formula E Race At Home Challenge. The Race at Home Challenge sees Formula E drivers compete in an esports competition during the red flag period of racing due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ahead of Season 6, the team announced that for every FANBOOST vote received by the team’s drivers Pascal Wehrlein and Jérôme D’Ambrosio will convert into a tree planted; meaning fans have a direct positive impact on the environment by voting.

Now, as part of this initiative, for every viewer tuning into Twitch at www.twitch.com/fiaformulae for the Race At Home Challenge finale weekend on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June starting at 3:30pm BST, Mahindra Racing will plant a tree with a commitment of up to half a million trees.

The initiative is a measure that Mahindra Racing is taking as it continually strives to make positive changes for the environment. A full mature tree can provide a year long oxygen supply to a family of four and can absorb as much as 48 pounds of CO2 per year.

Mahindra Racing was the first, and remains the only, Formula E team to achieve FIA Sustainability Accreditation. The squad first successfully attained its two star rating in November 2016 and, following a periodic audit in February 2019, Mahindra Racing maintained its status in the framework, with the aim of being carbon neutral by 2020.

The team is committed to the FIA environmental certification programme by minimising its environmental impact and working towards achieving carbon neutrality. It also takes learnings from advanced technologies in its race car to apply it to its road cars within its Race to Road initiative, developing and promoting more sustainable transportation solutions.

  • Pascal Wehrlein wins for Mahindra Racing in Round 4 of the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge
  • Second consecutive win and now tops the leaderboard
  • Lucas Muller wins the Challenge Grid race and moves up to P2 in the Series
The halfway point of the eight weekend ABB Formula E Race At Home Challenge saw Mahindra Racing’s Pascal Wehrlein and Jerome D’Ambrosio head to the virtual Hong Kong E-Prix circuit for Round 4 of the sim series.

After qualifying in P2, Pascal Wehrlein was caught up in a first lap incident which saw him drop down to fourth place. Undeterred, Mahindra’s #94 driver moved up through the field, overtaking James Calado on lap four and then taking advantage of Edoardo Mortara’s mistake on the following lap to take the lead.  He then opened up a commanding gap and cruised to a consecutive win, and to the top of the leaderboard.

Jerome qualified in 8th position and ran in a points-scoring position for a good portion of the race but was eliminated at the end of lap 10 due to the ‘Race Royale’ format, finishing 17th.

Earlier, Mahindra Racing’s Challenge Grid driver, Lucas Muller took a sensational victory in the closing stages of the race, moving him up to P2 in the Series; “I’m a bit speechless to be honest. I really wasn’t expecting to be fighting for a win but I think Joshua made a mistake in the chicane and then after that I was closing in and started to think that this could actually happen!”

PASCAL WEHRLEIN, #94: “Today was a bit special with the qualifying and the wet conditions, so it was unexpected for everyone. The race was chaotic at the beginning and my car ended up being slightly damaged – the steering was to the left - but I was able to be fast in these conditions and brought it home.”

DILBAGH GILL, CEO AND TEAM PRINCIPAL: “It’s been another fantastic day for Mahindra Racing!  It was a chaotic start to the race, but Pascal’s pace was lightning and he took a commanding win - his second of the series which puts him top of the leaderboard with four more races to go.  And with our sim racer Lucas Muller securing victory in the earlier Challenge Grid and moving up to second in the series, we couldn't have asked for more!”

9 May 2020 - Round three of the eight weekend ABB Formula E Race At Home Challenge took place today, with all 24 regular FIA Formula E Championship drivers taking to the virtual Monaco E-Prix circuit to battle it out for victory in the sim series.

Pascal Wehrlein dominated proceedings, taking Pole Position and then a commanding lights-to-flag race victory as well as Fastest Lap to extract maximum points from the event.

Mahindra Racing’s #94 driver, who impressed in the first two rounds, made a statement straight out the box today by sealing pole position for the race, earning a €1,000 donation to UNICEF from Julius Baer, which will go towards helping support children affected by the Coronavirus crisis around the world. He went on to take a dominating win, unpressured by competitors behind. Other sim series frontrunners Stoffel Vandoorne and Maxi Günther finished alongside Pascal on the podium.

Pascal scored maximum points out of today’s event; 25 points for the win, 1 point for the Julius Baer Pole Position and a further point for the DHL Fastest Lap.

Jerome qualified in 10th position and ran in a points-scoring position for a good portion of the race but was eliminated at the end of lap 13 due to the ‘Race Royale’ format, finishing 14th.

Pascal Wehrlein: “The start was very important and I’m not sure what happened behind but I saw there was a crash. After that I had a small gap and I just worked to keep the pace. In the end I was a bit quicker but for me it was quite a straightforward race. It’s nice to take the win for Mahindra Racing in Monaco and get a full points haul!”

Dilbagh Gill:
"It's fantastic to say Mahindra Racing won today in Monaco! I'm very happy that as a team we are supporting Formula E's Race At Home Challenge in support of UNICEF and are putting on a show for the fans at home that are currently missing out on their sporting action. The afternoon started well with Mahindra Racing’s sim driver Lucas Müller finishing on the podium in second in the Challenge race, then it got even better! Pascal has looked strong the last couple of weeks and now he has had the perfect day, scoring maximum points. The race for the championship is on!"

  • Jerome D’Ambrosio and Pascal Wehrlein will race in the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge
  • Round 1 takes place on the Hong Kong E-Prix track on Saturday 25 April 2020
  • The new Esports competition will raise funds for UNICEF
Mahindra Racing drivers Jerome D’Ambrosio and Pascal Wehrlein will this weekend swap real life racing for virtual racing as they line-up for Round 1 of the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge. Jerome and Pascal will take to the virtual Hong Kong E-Prix track on Saturday 25 April for the opening race of this new eight-week Esports competition, which is the first major fundraising initiative in Formula E’s partnership with UNICEF that aims to keep children around the world safe, healthy and learning in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

The #64 and #94 drivers will participate in a one-lap qualifying session, which follows the Formula E championship’s four group format, with each group consisting of six drivers. The race takes the format of a ‘Race Royale’ battle; after lights out on the race, one driver will be eliminated after every lap until there are 10 drivers remaining to battle it out in one final ‘sprint to the finish’ lap to determine the winner. The race points system will be the same system the championship uses; 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 distributed to the top ten, with one point awarded to the driver with the DHL Fastest Lap and one point to the driver who qualifies in Julius Baer Pole Position. Drivers will be fighting hard for the chance to become the inaugural Formula E sim series champion.

Following the temporary postponement of the 2019/20 season, the eight-week ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge blends together the real and gaming worlds. Fans will be able to watch all the action on the Formula E website, Facebook, YouTube and Twitch accounts. Mahindra Racing’s passioneers can also follow Jerome and Pascal on their individual Twitch streams as well.

Round 1 of the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge takes place on Saturday 25 April from 15:30 BST and will take place each Saturday for eight weeks.

JEROME D’AMBROSIO, #64: “It will be great to be racing against my Formula E competitors again, and to be helping to raise awareness and funds for UNICEF and the vital work they are doing during this pandemic. We might not be back trackside just yet, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be any less competitive on track. It should be a lot of fun for the fans to watch from their homes!”

PASCAL WEHRLEIN, #94: “I’m looking forward to being back racing – albeit virtually!  It’s a challenging time for everyone, so I’m pleased that we can be putting on a good show for the fans watching at home as well as the event raising funds for a very worthy cause. It will be great for us drivers to be racing regularly again – even though it’s virtual racing, it will still help keep us sharp for when we go back to real life racing.”

DILBAGH GILL, CEO AND TEAM PRINCIPAL: “Mahindra Racing is proud to participate and support the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge as it raises funds for the invaluable work that UNICEF is doing. In these unprecedented times, it’s important for the motorsport community to come together to support each other and those who are less fortunate, and this series is a fantastic way to do this. We are all missing racing in Formula E, but in the meantime I will be cheering Jerome and Pascal on from home as they fly the Mahindra Racing flag in Esports. Hong Kong has been a good circuit to us in the past; we won the race there in Season 4, so let’s see what we can do in the virtual world!”

The Venturi Group - to which french electric motorcycle constructor Voxan Motors belongs - is applying the health directives issued by the Monegasque Government.
The development teams responsible for the Voxan Wattman motorcycle, which has just completed its initial on-track testing, are now confined to their homes.

Given this situation, it is no longer possible to continue fine-tuning the machine on-track, and the electric motorcycle world speed record attempt, originally planned to take place in Bolivia in July 2020, has been postponed.

Gildo Pastor, President of Venturi Group:

“The health and safety of my teams is paramount. In view of the current health crisis, I have put in place the necessary measures. All of my staff, whether they are attached to Venturi North America (Columbus, Ohio) or to the headquarters in Monaco, are now working from home.

We will establish a new calendar of operations as soon as the health situation allows it, and announce the new operational arrangements for this project, which is very important to me personally.

I want to thank all of the people and organisations involved in this adventure for their efforts and understanding. I look forward to meeting up with them again and getting our world record attempt back on track.”

Following the decision taken last night by the FIA World Endurance Championship promotor in Sebring, we spoke to CEO Gérard Neveu in Florida to find out some more details about the decision.

When did you make the decision to cancel the race?
As you know we had been monitoring the situation closely but, as soon as President Trump made the announcement about the ban on flights from mainland Europe (9pm EST, 11 March 2020), we knew that we had little choice but to cancel immediately. So many members of our paddock come from within the Schengen zone that it would be impossible to hold the race without them. We acted quickly as so many team members – our own within the WEC and our competitors – were about to get on planes to come to Florida. We released the news as early as possible in Europe to give people warning to cancel or change plans.
Could you have made the decision earlier?
Working in conjunction with IMSA and Sebring Raceway, and taking into consideration the advice from the World Health Organisation and US federal and state health authorities that we had on each day leading up to 11th March, it wasn’t necessary to take this decision any earlier. We were going ahead. There were concerns, of course, especially regarding the situation in Italy which we were evaluating but, at 5pm yesterday, it was still possible at that time to race.
Will the race be run at a later date?
With our season being run over two calendar years this option is more difficult for us than, say, IMSA which could feasibly postpone a race to later in the year.
It’s difficult to say more on this right now. At this point it probably doesn’t need to be said but we are all desperately disappointed. SuperSebring was not just a hugely important event for sports car racing, as far as visibility in the USA and results are concerned, but on a personal level it was a favourite for almost everyone involved. We are facing a very challenging situation that is totally unprecedented and unpredictable, and one that is changing every day.
What happens to all the freight and infrastructure already in place?
Our WEC logistics and sporting team were already on site in Florida for the set up. They, together with our logistics partner DHL Global Forwarding, will ensure that the freight is all safely packed up and shipped back to Europe. It is a huge job, but we have an excellent team working on this. I would like to use this opportunity to say a big thank you to the whole organisation team and the different suppliers involved in this very difficult situation who are working day and night to resolve matters. Very sincere thanks too to our partners from IMSA, all the WEC competitors for their full support in these unique and challenging circumstances.
What implications does this have for the WEC?
Before answering this, our first and biggest concern is about the people affected by the virus, wherever they are. Firstly, we have to look after each other and stand together, supporting each other, to overcome the coronavirus pandemic.
Having said that, like so many other racing championships, companies and organisations, the commercial, sporting and human impact this will have for the future is considerable so we must work even harder to adapt, refine, renew or revitalise our championship. We are not saying that it will be easy, but this is what we have to do.
In the short term, what we must remember, however, is that we are in the middle of a transitory situation – even if it is one without a definitive end. We must stay calm, take care of those we are closest to, and take each day’s challenges as they come.
Will other races be cancelled?
We are very, very aware that this is a rapidly changing situation, and one that none of us have faced before. Honestly, right now, we can’t answer that question because it’s not just our decision to take. We will keep you all informed as soon as possible. Of course, we will maintain our existing Covid-19 monitoring group and will continue to keep our paddock informed of any developments.

Monaco, 4 March 2020

Today, the Venturi Group officially opened its new Monegasque headquarters. The constructor and specialist in high performance electric vehicles has chosen the year of its 20th anniversary to move into new facilities worthy of its lofty ambitions.

SAME ADDRESS, NEW DRIVE

Two decades ago, Monegasque entrepreneur Gildo Pastor bought the French automobile manufacturer Venturi and immediately took two crucial strategic decisions, focusing on electric engines and moving the business to n°7 rue du Gabian, in the heart of Monaco's Fontvieille business district. Today, the address remains the same, with Venturi's teams moving eleven storeys down to occupy 1,100 square metres on the ground floor of the Gildo Pastor Center.

The move to the new facilities represents a key moment in Venturi's history. Twenty years after forging a new path as one of the pioneers of electric mobility, Gildo Pastor is injecting new energy and dynamism into a firm that has now established itself as a group. The new HQ is home to Venturi, Voxan Motors (electric motorcycle manufacturer), and the Formula E team ROKiT Venturi Racing.
FRESH, INDUSTRIAL-STYLE DESIGN

Gildo Pastor handed the vitally important task of creating the layout and architecture of the new facilities to Sacha Lakic, the gifted French designer known for his achievements in fields as diverse as architecture, art de vivre, automobiles and motorcycles. Every Venturi and Voxan machine built has been designed by Sacha Lakic.

The new headquarters are intended to be stylish, warm and industrial all at once. The bare concrete and visible ventilation shafts contrast elegantly with the pine wood ceilings, soft lighting and bamboo ornaments.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY AND FUTURE-PROOFING

Through the imposing bay windows is a showroom, in the centre of which sits Venturi's flagship creation: the VBB-3, the fastest electric vehicle in the world (549 km/h). The 11-metre-long "rocket" forms the backbone around which the Venturi and Voxan workstations are laid out.

Behind the space occupied by Venturi and Voxan is the second part of the building, home to  ROKiT Venturi Racing, the Formula E team helmed by Susie Wolff. At the heart of this "competition" department is the team's simulator, a vitally important piece of kit so central to race preparations that the rest of the facilities were designed around it.

The third and final area of Venturi's new headquarters houses the mechanics workshops and electronics labs. In this part of the building, hidden away from view, the Voxan Wattman is currently being built. The motorcycle made in Monaco will attempt to set a new world speed record in its category (beating the existing record of 330 km/h) in Bolivia this July.
FULL STEAM AHEAD

"In 2000, when I converted Venturi to electric engines, few believed we had any chance of succeeding. Twenty years on, we are going from strength to strength, and moving into a space that will enable us to grow even further. I am delighted to see the Venturi, ROKiT Venturi Racing and Voxan Motors teams working together in an environment worthy of our ambitions". Gildo Pastor, President of Venturi Group

"I created a place that embodies Venturi's values: innovation, technology, and environmental responsibility. This space is a place for sharing and exchanges, that symbolises our vision of mobility, our know-how and our future challenges.
The eco-designed layout creates an atmosphere conducive to collaboration and creativity. It's a unique place in which the most ambitious projects will gradually come to fruition".
Sacha Lakic, Venturi Group Designer.

Mahindra Racing returns to its happy hunting ground for round five of the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship on Saturday 29 February after the squad became the only team to make four consecutive Super Pole appearances in Season 6 last time out in Mexico. Following the Marrakesh E-Prix, the team is also pleased to announce it will be running Pipo Derani and its Reserve and Simulator driver Sam Dejonghe in the rookie test on Sunday 1 March.

Jérôme D’Ambrosio, the 2018/19 season winner of the Marrakesh E-Prix, who became the sixth highest scoring Formula E driver of all time after the Mexico City E-Prix, will pilot the #64 M6Electro. His teammate Pascal Wehrlein, who had a strong qualifying session in his very first Formula E race in Marrakesh in Season 5, will be looking to repeat that in his #94 M6Electro.

Derani will join Mahindra Racing for the rookie test day. He has made a name for himself in single seater and sportscar racing as a British Formula 3 and Petit Le Mans winner. In 2016 he won the 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Daytona to become the first Brazilian to achieve these two feats in the same year. The 26-year-old has since won the 12 Hours of Sebring two further times (2018 and 2019), making him the youngest ever three-time winner and joining the Florida venue’s hall of fame alongside Formula 1 Champion Phil Hill and the legendary Mario Andretti. Most recently, Derani was runner-up in the 2019 IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship.

Dejonghe is a familiar face in the Formula E paddock. This will be the Belgian driver’s third rookie test. Since his last Formula E test, Dejonghe has grown his trophy collection from racing in the European Le Mans Series and continued as an F1 commentator for PlaySports, in addition to his role at Mahindra Racing. He’s back in Marrakesh for a third time to continue to help the squad with its M6Electro development programme.

The Marrakesh E-Prix takes place on Saturday 29 February at 15.04 local time. The Marrakesh rookie test follows on Sunday 1 March.
