The Guadalajara International Film Festival and Film4Climate focus global attention on environmental preservation, climate action, and social justice
Los Angeles, November 3, 2017 – Today, during the 7th edition of the Guadalajara Film Festival in Los Angeles (FICG in L.A.), Human Rights Defender Bianca Jagger was announced as a Film4Climate Ambassador.
“When I was a film school student in New York, concern over the state of our climate was not much of an issue. We were talking about damage to our environment, the destruction of our tropical forests or the pollution of our waters, but little did we realize the overarching dangers of climate change,” Bianca Jagger noted.
Film4Climate is a global initiative of the World Bank Group’s Connect4Climate program dedicated to advancing environmental sustainability and inclusion of social messages in film and creative visual storytelling. Film4Climate counts on a global network of knowledge partners who are committed to advocacy and action on climate change and social issues, including the Guadalajara International Film Festival.
The Guadalajara International Film Festival is the premier film festival in Latin America, providing a rich forum for creative exchange between professional filmmakers, critics, industry professionals, and students. Each fall, FICG in L.A. brings the best of the festival to the City of Angels, offering Hollywood with a window into the world of contemporary Ibero-American cinema.
“We have seen the amount of talent that comes out of Latin America, and we strongly feel it is important to present it to the rest of the world on a regular basis. What is more, the range of subject matter covered and the strong commitment to exploring universal social concerns makes cinema from South America a real force to be reckoned with” pointed out Festival Director Ivan Trujillo.
The festival presented Bianca Jagger with the “Tree of Life” Award, honoring her many achievements as defender of human rights and a proponent of environmental justice.
“Climate change and human rights are inextricably linked. The challenges to achieving human dignity for all have been increased exponentially by climate change. This global issue is of particular concern to me because it directly affects human rights. If we don’t tackle climate change now, our efforts to improve people’s everyday lives will be to no avail” she added.
Bianca Jagger has been committed to human rights causes since 1979 when she returned to her native Nicaragua with the International Red Cross while the country was under Somoza’s rule. She is the Founder and President of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation (BJHRF), and over the years has been presented with many awards acknowledging her work and dedication. She became a Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador in 2003 and sits on Amnesty International’s Leadership Council.
As a former actress and model, she welcomes the objectives of Film4Climate to use the power of film to reach a global audience in a direct and emotional way.
“This initiative incorporates many of my interests, and it is leading the discussion about climate change and sustainability within the creative industries, encouraging positive action and change in behavior. That is what we need right now – and as fast as possible,” Ms. Jagger reminded the captivated audience.

El Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara y Film4Climate centran la atención mundial en la preservación del medio ambiente, la acción climática y la justicia social
Los Ángeles, 3 de noviembre de 2017 - Hoy, durante la séptima edición del Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara en Los Ángeles (FICG en L.A.), la Defensora de Derechos Humanos Bianca Jagger fue anunciada como Embajadora de Film4Climate.
"Cuando era estudiante de cine en Nueva York, la preocupación por el estado de nuestro clima no era un gran problema. Estábamos hablando de daños a nuestro medio ambiente, la destrucción de nuestros bosques tropicales o la contaminación de nuestras aguas, pero poco nos dimos cuenta de los peligros generales del cambio climático ", señaló Bianca Jagger.
Film4Climate es una iniciativa global del programa Connect4Climate del Grupo del Banco Mundial dedicado a promover la sostenibilidad ambiental y la inclusión de mensajes sociales en el cine y la narración visual creativa. Film4Climate cuenta con una red global de socios de conocimiento comprometidos con la defensa y la acción sobre el cambio climático y las cuestiones sociales, incluido el Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara.
El Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara es el principal festival de cine de América Latina, y brinda un foro rico para el intercambio creativo entre cineastas profesionales, críticos, profesionales de la industria y estudiantes. Cada otoño, FICG en L.A trae lo mejor del festival a la Ciudad de los Ángeles, ofreciendo Hollywood con una ventana al mundo del cine contemporáneo iberoamericano.
"Hemos visto la cantidad de talento que sale de América Latina, y creemos firmemente que es importante presentarlo al resto del mundo de manera regular. Además, la variedad de temas tratados y el firme compromiso de explorar las preocupaciones sociales universales hacen que el cine de Sudamérica sea una fuerza real a tener en cuenta ", señaló el director del Festival, Ivan Trujillo.
El festival reconoció a Bianca Jagger con el "Árbol de la vida", honrando sus muchos logros como defensora de los derechos humanos y defensora de la justicia ambiental.
"El cambio climático y los derechos humanos están inextricablemente vinculados. Los desafíos para lograr la dignidad humana para todos se han incrementado exponencialmente debido al cambio climático. Este problema global me preocupa especialmente porque afecta directamente los derechos humanos. Si no abordamos el cambio climático ahora, nuestros esfuerzos por mejorar la vida cotidiana de las personas serán en vano ", agregó.
Bianca Jagger ha estado comprometida con las causas de los derechos humanos desde 1979 cuando regresó a su natal Nicaragua con la Cruz Roja Internacional mientras el país estaba bajo el gobierno de Somoza. Ella es la fundadora y presidenta de la Fundación de Derechos Humanos Bianca Jagger (BJHRF), y a lo largo de los años ha recibido numerosos premios que reconocen su trabajo y dedicación. Se convirtió en Embajadora de Buena Voluntad del Consejo de Europa en 2003 y forma parte del Consejo de Liderazgo de Amnistía Internacional.
Como ex actriz y modelo, acoge con satisfacción los objetivos de Film4Climate de utilizar el poder de la película para llegar a una audiencia global de una manera directa y emocional.
"Esta iniciativa incorpora muchos de mis intereses y lidera la discusión sobre el cambio climático y la sostenibilidad dentro de las industrias creativas, fomentando acciones positivas y cambios en el comportamiento. Eso es lo que necesitamos en este momento, y lo más rápido posible ", recordó la Sra. Jagger a la cautivada audiencia.
