Formula E has been ranked as the Best Total Performer from more than 300 global sports organisations in the 2022 Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sports (GSBS) annual report.
GSBS is an independent, global not-for-profit organisation, which analyses and benchmarks the sustainability performance of professional sports organisations through an unbiased, science-driven and data-based process.
The study analysed more than 50 elite sports organisations of more than 300 invited to take part. Sports federations and leagues ranked in the report include the NFL, NBA, FIFA, Formula 1, UFC and WWE as well as clubs including the New York Yankees, FC Barcelona, LA Lakers, Dallas Cowboys, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.
Formula E achieved a record-breaking benchmark score to win Best Total Performance 2022. Formula E was also ranked highest in three of the remaining four categories: Best Corporate Performance, Best Environmental Performance, and Best Governance Performance. Italian football club Juventus won the Best Social Performance title.
Jamie Reigle, Chief Executive Officer, Formula E, said:
“Setting the global standard for sustainability in sport has been a core characteristic of Formula E since we began in 2014. We welcome the top ranking by GSBS as recognition for the dedication of our employees, teams and partners. We also acknowledge the efforts and achievements in sustainability by other major sports organisations around the world and welcome that progress. Together, we have the potential to engage billions of fans in the mission to combat climate change and make a positive difference to the lives of future generations.”
Christian Hartmann, Chief Executive Officer, GSBS, said:
"Formula E impressed us at the GSBS on several levels. Overall, their corporate structure and processes reflect their commitment to sustainability. We assess a wide range of data points, environmental, social, governance, and business factors, and in each area, both the amount of data available and annual trends lead the industry. Sustainability is literally lived in Formula E, and the entire team's dedication was felt throughout the audit process. In combination, this has resulted in Formula E receiving a GSBS Award in 4 out of 5 categories and we are looking forward to documenting the development in the years to come."
Now entering Season 9, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship mission is to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles. The championship also operates as a testbed to push the development of new technologies needed for an electric, low-carbon future. Leading international car brands including Jaguar, Maserati, McLaren, Mahindra, Nissan and Porsche are among the 11 teams in the championship.
Formula E is the only sport in the world to achieve net zero since inception and is a founding member of UNICEF’s Safe and Healthy Environment Fund, specifically designed to help and educate children affected by climate change.
Ahead of the first race of Season 9 in Mexico City on 14 January, pre-season testing is underway in Valencia this week where the all-new Gen3 race car is on track for the first time.
The Gen3 is the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever built. Key sustainability characteristics of the Gen3 include:
- The carbon footprint of the Gen3 has been measured from the design phase to inform all reduction measures taken to reduce environmental impact, while all unavoidable emissions are offset as part of Formula E’s net zero carbon commitment.
- Linen and recycled carbon fibre are used in bodywork construction for the first time in a formula car featuring recycled carbon fibre from retired Gen2 cars and reducing the overall amount of virgin carbon fibre used. This reduces the carbon footprint of the production of the Gen3 bodywork more than 10%. All waste carbon fibre will be reused for new applications through adoption of an innovative process from the aviation industry.
- Gen3 batteries are among the most advanced, sustainable batteries ever made consisting of sustainably-sourced minerals while battery cells will be reused and recycled at end of life.
- Natural rubber and recycled fibres make up 26% of new Gen3 tyres and all tyres will be fully recycled after racing.
- All Gen3 suppliers operate in line with top international standards to reduce environmental impacts of manufacturing (ISO 14001) and be FIA Environmental Accreditation 3-Star rated.
- Fastest Formula E car yet with a top speed over 322 kph / 200 mph.
- Most efficient formula racing car ever with more than 40% of the energy used within a race produced by regenerative braking.
- Around 95% power efficiency from an electric motor delivering up to 350kW of power (470BHP), compared to approximately 40% for an internal combustion engine.
- First-ever formula car with both front and rear powertrains. A new front powertrain adds 250kW to the 350kW at the rear, more than doubling the regenerative capability of the current Gen2 to a total of 600kW.
- Ultra-high speed charging capability of 600kW for additional energy during a race, almost double the energy of the most advanced commercial chargers in the world.
- The first formula car that will not feature rear hydraulic brakes with the addition of the front powertrain and its regenerative capability.

All eyes were on the Rock of Monaco for the legendary Formula 1 Grand Prix this weekend, and on the iconic TAG Heuer timepiece celebrating its 50th anniversary in the Principality. In honour of this milestone, it was announced that throughout the year, five creations will be successively revealed, inspired by the different decades from 1969 to 2019, and paying tribute to timeless design, enduring innovation and a style icon now more contemporary than ever. The Monaco’s daring and iconic design has made it instantly recognisable. Every aspect of the Monaco timepiece design was radical, and went where no other watch had gone before in terms of design and technology. Not only was the TAG Heuer Monaco the first ever water-resistant square watch, it was also the first to feature an automatic-winding chronograph movement. Since its debut, the Monaco watch and the Monaco Grand Prix, for which TAG Heuer has been the Official Watch since 2011, have had a strong connection – the most glamorous Grand Prix of the Formula 1 season gave its name to the TAG Heuer Monaco collection in 1969. No other place and location would therefore have been more suitable for celebrating the iconic timepiece’s 50th anniversary. Taking over Monaco during the busiest weekend of the year, TAG Heuer unveiled the first Monaco limited edition at the beautiful Key Largo Villa, in the presence of Stéphane Bianchi, CEO of the LVMH Watchmaking Division and CEO of TAG Heuer and Frédéric Arnault, Chief Strategy and Digital Officer. They were joined by the rising star of the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Team Max Verstappen, as well as Patrick Dempsey, Bella Hadid, Winnie Harlow, Kai Lenny and selected guests from all over the world. Over the course of the exclusive three-day event, guests were granted access to some of the most prestigious and exciting events in Monaco, from a private tour of the Monaco Top Cars Collection museum including a retrospective of the Monaco timepiece, to a debrief of the Grand Prix qualifications with Christian Horner, Team Principal of the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Team. They also attended an exclusive party hosted on the TAG Heuer Yacht on Saturday evening with an exclusive performance by famous French DJ Bob Sinclair attended by Patrick Dempsey, Bella Hadid, Winnie Harlow, Jourdan Dunn, Kai Lenny and Jean-Éric Vergne. The event culminated on Sunday with VIP access to the coveted Formula 1 Grand Prix, for which TAG Heuer is the Official Watch. |

* He’s the first Louisiana driver to achieve this honor
* He’ll participate at the Formula Ford Festival & the Walter Hayes Trophy in England.
*Jeansonne also got a ticket to compete in the USF2000 shootout for the $200k scholarship
* Recently he tested a USF2000 open-wheel car and won in the latest Lucas Oil Series round.
SULPHUR, Louisiana (October 7, 2017) – Aaron Jeansonne was chosen for the Team USA Scholarship. This gives him the opportunity to compete in the prestigious Formula Ford Festival, where you can only get an entry by invitation, which is held at Brands Hatch (Former Formula 1 track) and also he’ll race in the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone (current F1 venue), both race meetings in England. Also, he got invited to the Mazda Road to Indy $200,000 USF2000 Scholarship Shootout.
“I can’t even put it into words… it’s such an honor to be chosen for the Team USA scholarship this year. It was only a wild dream a year ago and now it’s a reality. It’s insane! I waited very patiently and eagerly for the news and finally (Team USA Scholarship Founder and President) Jeremy Shaw told me to give him a call one day and the first thing he asked was if I wanted to go to England and my heart literally stopped. Of course, I replied: yes,” Jeansonne said.
“I’d never thought in my life that I would have the chance to represent the red, white and blue in anything, which makes this almost surreal, but I just plan to maximize the opportunity, have the time of my life and have as much fun as possible,” he added.
“I thank Team USA and all its supporters for everything and I believe it is the greatest program in the world in racing and without a program such as this, lots of very deserving drivers would have a much smaller chance of making it in this sport,” the 19-year old young man said.
Jeansonne is the first Louisiana native to become Team USA alumni and perhaps he is the least experienced of the participants, but managed to impress the racing community with his maiden victory in his debut in the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series last year. Since then, Aaron has managed to achieve three wins and he’s a regular in the podium in all race weekends, with three second places and three third spots in his first full-season.
Almost a quarter of the drivers in this year’s Verizon IndyCar Series (five out of 21 full-season campaigners) such as: Josef Newgarden (won Formula Ford Festival in Kent Class, Indy Lights champion and 2017 IndyCar champion), A.J. Allmendinger (Champ Car Rookie of the Year and also NASCAR, IndyCar and Grand-Am driver), Charlie Kimball, JR Hildebrand, Conor Daly and Spencer Pigot, plus current sports car stand-outs Dane Cameron, Joel Miller, Joey Hand, Andy Lally, Bryan Sellers, Bryan Herta, Jimmy Vasser and Trent Hindman, are all Team USA alumni.
The Sulphur, Louisiana driver has been busy lately, since he was one of the four candidates for this year’s Team USA Scholarships who recently enjoyed the opportunity given by Bryn Nuttall of BN Racing to test a Tatuus-Mazda USF-17 at the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Illinois.
The young American driver and his peers received advice during the two-day outing by BN’s driver coach, Victor Franzoni, who recently clinched the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, and former Team USA Scholarship winner Michai Stephens.
“I want to thank Bryn Nuttall, BN Racing, Team USA Scholarship, Jeremy Shaw and all those involved to make this test happen. This opportunity means the world to me. Bryn was very welcoming and I found him to be very easy to relate to. Having the chance to learn from Victor and Luke Varley was something I didn’t take for granted; I took in a ton of information in a very short amount of time.”
The young driver is already using some of the knowledge learned in the above test, since he’s carrying momentum to England fresh off a win in the latest round of the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series.
