To mark World Environment Day this Friday, 5 June, Mahindra Racing is extending its Season 6 tree planting initiative to the ABB Formula E Race At Home Challenge. The Race at Home Challenge sees Formula E drivers compete in an esports competition during the red flag period of racing due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ahead of Season 6, the team announced that for every FANBOOST vote received by the team’s drivers Pascal Wehrlein and Jérôme D’Ambrosio will convert into a tree planted; meaning fans have a direct positive impact on the environment by voting.

Now, as part of this initiative, for every viewer tuning into Twitch at www.twitch.com/fiaformulae for the Race At Home Challenge finale weekend on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June starting at 3:30pm BST, Mahindra Racing will plant a tree with a commitment of up to half a million trees.

The initiative is a measure that Mahindra Racing is taking as it continually strives to make positive changes for the environment. A full mature tree can provide a year long oxygen supply to a family of four and can absorb as much as 48 pounds of CO2 per year.

Mahindra Racing was the first, and remains the only, Formula E team to achieve FIA Sustainability Accreditation. The squad first successfully attained its two star rating in November 2016 and, following a periodic audit in February 2019, Mahindra Racing maintained its status in the framework, with the aim of being carbon neutral by 2020.

The team is committed to the FIA environmental certification programme by minimising its environmental impact and working towards achieving carbon neutrality. It also takes learnings from advanced technologies in its race car to apply it to its road cars within its Race to Road initiative, developing and promoting more sustainable transportation solutions.

  • Pascal Wehrlein wins for Mahindra Racing in Round 3 of the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge
  • Maximum points haul as he also took Pole Position and Fastest Lap
  • The Formula E Esports competition raises funds for UNICEF
9 May 2020 - Round three of the eight weekend ABB Formula E Race At Home Challenge took place today, with all 24 regular FIA Formula E Championship drivers taking to the virtual Monaco E-Prix circuit to battle it out for victory in the sim series.

Pascal Wehrlein dominated proceedings, taking Pole Position and then a commanding lights-to-flag race victory as well as Fastest Lap to extract maximum points from the event.

Mahindra Racing’s #94 driver, who impressed in the first two rounds, made a statement straight out the box today by sealing pole position for the race, earning a €1,000 donation to UNICEF from Julius Baer, which will go towards helping support children affected by the Coronavirus crisis around the world. He went on to take a dominating win, unpressured by competitors behind. Other sim series frontrunners Stoffel Vandoorne and Maxi Günther finished alongside Pascal on the podium.

Pascal scored maximum points out of today’s event; 25 points for the win, 1 point for the Julius Baer Pole Position and a further point for the DHL Fastest Lap.

Jerome qualified in 10th position and ran in a points-scoring position for a good portion of the race but was eliminated at the end of lap 13 due to the ‘Race Royale’ format, finishing 14th.

Pascal Wehrlein: “The start was very important and I’m not sure what happened behind but I saw there was a crash. After that I had a small gap and I just worked to keep the pace. In the end I was a bit quicker but for me it was quite a straightforward race. It’s nice to take the win for Mahindra Racing in Monaco and get a full points haul!”

Dilbagh Gill:
"It's fantastic to say Mahindra Racing won today in Monaco! I'm very happy that as a team we are supporting Formula E's Race At Home Challenge in support of UNICEF and are putting on a show for the fans at home that are currently missing out on their sporting action. The afternoon started well with Mahindra Racing’s sim driver Lucas Müller finishing on the podium in second in the Challenge race, then it got even better! Pascal has looked strong the last couple of weeks and now he has had the perfect day, scoring maximum points. The race for the championship is on!"

As a result of the ongoing coronavirus health situation and current restrictions in France and around the world, the organiser of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, together with the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), have decided to postpone the 88th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, originally scheduled for 13/14th June 2020.

The new date will be 19/20th September 2020.
The postponement of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will result in revisions to the FIA WEC, European Le Mans Series, Michelin Le Mans Cup and Ligier European Series calendars. This information will be confirmed in due course, together with the full timetable for the 88th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2020.
During this complicated time, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest wishes to express, even more than usual, all its support for and recognition of healthcare personnel everywhere.
Pierre Fillon, President of the ACO“Postponing the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2020, originally scheduled for 13/14th June, is the appropriate solution in face of the exceptional health circumstances that we are all going through today. It goes without saying that we will make every effort to ensure the safety and quality of our events.
“First of all, I want to ask everyone to take no risk for themselves, their families and others. Today it is a question of stopping the spread of this virus. I would also like to spare warm thoughts for all the medical personnel working to protect our health.
“We are more than ever working as one team together with our competitors, partners, fans, media, medical services, organisation teams and marshals.”
Gérard Neveu, CEO of FIA WEC and ELMS“It is the right decision to delay in light of the current situation. We are now working on revising our WEC, ELMS, Michelin Le Mans Cup and Ligier European Series calendars for the remainder of this season, and for the WEC’s Season 9 which was due to start in September 2020. We will come back to you in the coming days with more news for both the FIA World Endurance Championship and the European Le Mans Series.”

The ABB NOBIUM F-E FiA's México Prix is an outstanding race due to two essential factors: It has no race car drivers in the competition, and its race track is a section of the AHR, not the acostummed streets from the city to run these electric now enhanced race cars.

"It's amazing to see the mexican fans in the stadium" Sam Bird said; It's really gonna be good to be on track this saturday." declares Robin Frijns.

Both drivers expect to start upfront after the qualifyings, at the same time they hope to leave behind a little issued that have caused problems on race. "We going to be moving forwards straight to the championship, both, as a team and drivers as well". Said Bird, who gave a tip to the fans for to feel free on the fanboost when they achieve the top 5 drivers, during the race.

As a partner team the Envision Virgin Racing Team use this season the Audi e-tron FE06 chasis. Despite this, they said manufacturers are the future of technology, which in a city as Mexico's results very important, where It can be spread the message of benefits that could bring electro movility.

Sam Bird explain the importance to use a helmet behind an electric wheelcar: "We got into racing because we like to race; you shouldn't have to lose that when you begin to progress in other aspects. Money nor fame matters. It's not an important part of being a driver".

"The relation between man and machine it could be a matter of weekend but involves the entire team" (Frijns).
About the Attack Mode the drivers of the Envision Virgin Racing Team are conscious that It is a matter of strategy, gives more power to win or lose the race which it does not make the racing boring at all, it's equal fun for the pits strategy. (Sic)

Taking advantage from being at the K1 Speed's the Envision twosome drove a demo race and one with kids and teenagers just for the fun of motorsports.

Bahrain stat attack!

Some of our favourite statistics from the WEC's previous visits to Bahrain.
  • To date, 171 cars have combined for 28,844 racing laps at Bahrain International Circuit. The total distance covered equals 156,104 km, or 97,002 miles.
  • Bahrain 2015 saw all 32 of the starters take the chequered flag 6 hours later. A combined 5,713 race laps - or 19,213 miles, were covered, in what became the first full-duration race with a 100% finish rate.
  • It is also the only circuit where Porsche, Aston Martin and Ferrari all swept the GTE fastest laps. Porsche set it in 2013 – by Lietz & Ruberti. Aston Martin in 2015 – Sørensen & Lamy, and again in 2016 – Adam & Lamy. Before Ferrari in 2017 – Rigon & Griffin.

GEOX DRAGON announced the signing of Nico Müller, to drive the #7 Penske EV-4 in the sixth season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.
This season will be Nico’s first competition in a single-seater series since he scored two wins in his 2013 Formula Renault 3.5 campaign. Nico has spent the past six years climbing to the top of the DTM, and currently is second in the 2019 Drivers’ Championship.
Müller got his first taste of Formula E with two seasons as a Test and Reserve Driver. During this time, he demonstrated blistering pace, leading the Rookie Test at the Circuit Moulay El Hassan in Marrakech in Season 4 by nearly a second, while simultaneously setting the circuit record. In Season 5, Nico repeated the feat.
Since coming on board, the Swiss driver has quickly integrated into the Team’s development program, working on the track and at the squad’s new Silverstone facility to continue refining the Season 6 package. Upon his joining the American Team, Nico said that “I have already met and started working with most of the Team. They are an extremely motivated group of racers. They have proven their ability to win races and challenge for podiums in Formula E. They have done it before, and we aim to do it in Season 6.”
Müller added that “we have a big challenge ahead of us. We are an independent manufacturer, and the level of competition in Formula E is the highest in Motorsport, but I have a lot of confidence in the Team. We have a compact structure, and everyone has a full grasp on the project, so together we will be able to move quickly and optimize the PENSKE AUTOSPORT package.”
On his rookie campaign, Nico commented that “I love street racing, and I am looking forward to lining up against the best guys out there. Formula E is particularly challenging, especially for a rookie, but I think we have an extremely exciting year ahead of us. We are looking forward to competing with these major OEMs, and I am pumped to be able to put pressure on the big teams right from the start in Riyadh.”
Jay Penske, Owner of GEOX DRAGON and PENSKE AUTOSPORT, welcomed Nico to the Team, saying that “I am very excited to have Nico behind the wheel of the #7 Penske EV-4 this season. Nico is a fierce competitor, and with him, we have the pieces in place to compete with the major OEM’s in this landmark Formula E season. I look forward to very solid results in the upcoming season.”

Venturi Racing will deploy Mercedes-Benz EQ technology in Season 6. This new agreement will see the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team supply the cooling system, rear frame, rear suspension, dampers, software, onboard electronics and wiring looms – as well as the new powertrain (inverter, motor, rear axle components and energy management software), which has been designed and developed by Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.

Venturi Racing’s test and race mileage with the new package will accelerate the learning process of the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team in its debut season, capitalising on Venturi’s experience both as the first manufacturer to commit to Formula E in 2013 and as a leader in the electric mobility arena for almost two decades through the wider Venturi Automobiles family.

Mahindra Racing already confirmed Jérôme D’Ambrosio and Pascal Wehrlein remain with the team for the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship. At a special event in Germany at which the race drivers were revealed alongside the M6Electro livery for season six, Mahindra Racing were also delighted to announce a new long-term technology partnership with ZF Friedrichshafen AG.

The global technology giant is supporting Mahindra Racing’s season six campaign with chassis development work, shock absorber provision and engineering services while work is already underway for the design and manufacture of the electric driveline for the 2020/21 season. In addition to the electric motor, development includes both single-gear, highly efficient transmission and the matching power electronics. This work builds on ZF’s successful and race-winning work to date in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship through its E-Mobility division, which already employs over 9,000 people worldwide since its inception in January 2016.

In line with the new partnership, the ZF branding will adorn the M6Electro cars from this season onwards. This season’s livery is an adaptation and evolution of the popular and distinctive M5Electro. It was unveiled this evening in Germany and retains the familiar red, white and blue hues that has ensured it stands out from the crowd.

Remaining with the team for a second consecutive season, Jérôme D’Ambrosio earned the team’s first podium of the 2018/19 season at the inaugural Diriyah E-Prix; the opening round of the championship. He then took his maiden win for the team at the next event in Marrakesh and was crowned a triple Formula E race-winner in only his second race for the team.

His teammate Pascal Wehrlein impressed in season five as the rookie secured a maiden Formula E podium in only his second race and took his first pole position at the next event in Mexico City. He added six Super Pole appearances and two fastest laps to his name throughout the 2018/19 campaign.

Nick Heidfeld will remain an integral part of the Mahindra Racing family and will continue in his advisory role and as the team’s official test and reserve driver. He drove the unraced M6Electro at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the competitive Hillclimb – two years after claiming the open-wheel eRecord in the M4Electro. Belgian racer Sam Dejonghe will also continue to work closely with the team in the position of reserve and sim driver.

Mahindra Racing will test the M6Electro at the all-teams pre-season test from 15-18 October at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain. The first race of the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship starts with a double-header at the Diriyah E-Prix on 22-23 November 2019.

Endurance racing took a significant step towards the future today with the approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council of the new 2020-2025 regulations. A new top category of cars, replacing the current LMP1 prototypes, will be introduced from September 2020 and the ‘Hypercar’ era will have begun.
After months of work between the ACO and FIA, the regulators for the FIA World Endurance Championship, and after consultation with automotive manufacturers across the globe, the technical regulations for the new category were presented and validated by the FIA’s WMSC today in Saint Petersburg in Russia.
Spectacular to look at, high technology, high performance and accessible to many due to well-defined cost controls, more on the new regulations can be found HERE (use backspace to return to presentation after viewing videos) including short interviews with Richard Mille, President of the FIA Endurance Commission, Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, and Gérard Neveu, CEO of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

From next season it will no longer be possible to carry out tyre changes at the same time as refuelling during a pit stop.
The name of the new hypercar class will be chosen by popular vote, and will be announced in the New Year.
